Personnel: Patricia Barber (vocals, piano); Michael Arnopol (bass guitar); Mark Walker (drums). Liner Note Author: Neil Tesser. Pianist/vocalist Patricia Barber's recording debut, Split, is a fairly straight-ahead affair featuring the idiosyncratic stylist on various standards and originals. Showcasing her unique approach to jazz, the album finds Barber mixing pointed and minimalist lines à la Chet Baker with a dramatic cabaret vocal style and complex harmonic post-bop passages -- a template that longtime fans will recognize. To these ends, Barber opens with a brisk Latin version of "Early Autumn," takes a dusky vocal turn on "Easy to Love," and shows her cerebral side on such originals as "Winter Illusion." Joining Barber here are bassist Michael Arnopol and drummer Mark Walker. When this album was recorded in February of 1961, it had been more than year since the Portrait in Jazz was issued, the disc that won the critics over. By the time of this issue, Evans had released four albums in six years, a pace unheard of during that time. Most musicians were issuing two, three, and even four records a year during the same era. Many speculate on Evans' personal problems at the time, but the truth of the matter lies in the recordings themselves, and Explorations proves that the artist was worth ...

$13.25 Composer: David S. Ware. David S. Ware: David S. Ware; Guillermo E. Brown, Matthew Shipp, William Parker . Audio Mixer: Stefan Heger. Liner Note Author: David S. Ware. Recording information: Vision Festival XI (06/18/2006). Photographer: Cara Regan. The work of free jazz titan David S. Ware seems to grow more refined, more ambitious, and more majestic as time moves on. RENUNCIATION (2007), featuring Ware's formidable quartet, is taken from a 2006 live date and contains eight compositions, each of which glows, morphs, startles, and seemingly reinvents the sonic stratosphere. Ware and company build structures that invite the listener in to witness dazzling displays of tension, engagement and release, and collective exploration in harmony and dissonance. The effects are entrancing, making RENUNCIATION a must for adventurous listeners and providing further proof that Ware is at the top of the free jazz game. Recorded at the 2006 Vision Festival XI in New York, Renunciation is the sound of a band who has been playing together for a very long time -- drummer Guillermo E. Brown is the ...
