The debut effort from Le Tigre sounds like the best new wave album not to come from the 1980s. Here, frontwoman Kathleen Hanna expands on the lo-fi sounds she tinkered with on her debut solo album, Julie Ruin. Le Tigre melds punk, new wave, and hip-hop into a seemingly cute package. Each song is hummable, and Hanna's "valley girl intelligentsia" voice is perfectly deceptive. In "Deceptacon," a song loaded with the kind of simple contradictions that made Kurt Cobain's lyrics so effective, Hanna sings, "Let me hear you depoliticize my rhyme." "What's Yr Take on Cassavetes" is the best song about an auteur since King Missile's "Martin Scorsese." "My My Metrocard" and "Les and Ray," two of the best songs on the album, display a welcome sort of contradiction: both songs seem to be about escape and exploration ("Think I'll go a little/but then I go far"), but the catchy hooks of these tunes are inescapable. With Bikini Kill, Hanna's politics were as subtle as the Empire State Building. But with Le Tigre, as with the great Tom Tom Club song "Genius of Love," the listener is left not only humming and dancing, but exploring the wealth of reference material hidden within its confines. ~ Brian Flota

Spin (3/00, p.147) - 9 out of 10 - "...Le Tigre is one funny band, and their album sparkles with a joie de vivre more bubbly than pink champagne....takes the listener on an urban adventure, using humor and poetic description..." Entertainment Weekly (11/19/99, p.150) - "...revives the sassy attitude of '60s girl groups but also brilliantly updates their infectious, sashaying groove....you can definately dance to it." - Rating: A- Uncut (3/00, p.88) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Hanna's voice can still rasp and bark....Crude, effective sampling and nimble girl-group tunes give LE TIGRE a constant kick..." Alternative Press (2/00, p.92) - 4 out of 5 - "...incorporates samples and canned drum beats...into its new wave and punk rock. But in everything from the raw, angry guitars...to the raunchy R&B romp...it's [Kathleen] Hanna's voice that stands out, inspiring in its power and force..." Le Tigre album
$11.99 Includes the EPs BIKINI KILL (formerly available as Kill Rock Stars 204) and YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH.
Recorded in 1991 and 1992. Includes liner notes by Kathleen Hanna and Tobi Vail.
Though they're quick to decry it in the CD liner notes, Bikini Kill found themselves manipulated into a position of being the premier "riot girl" band by a media obsessed with pigeon-holing everything. In actuality, the band comprised a number of different ethos and points of view, which at times seemed to lead to contradictory messages and gave their detractors ammunition--the band were called everything from exploitative to man-hating.
The first Bikini Kill "album" (six tracks, 16 minutes) features mid-tempo punk rock songs, including "Feels Blind," the clear blueprint for almost every Hole song (though Courtney Love is clearly more interested in commercial success), and "Thurston Hearts the Who," featuring simultaneous vocals, one skewering Sonic Youth and their "coolness," the other a sarcastic reading of a Bikini ...
| | Le Tigre Feminist Sweepstakes CD (2001) Enhanced CD
Le Tigre CD music
$12.49 On Le Tigre's second album Kathleen Hanna is no less radical, but her politically charged agenda sounds a bit callous and simple. And that's no accident: Hanna is simple. The concept behind Le Tigre, and the thing that differentiates it from her previous band, Bikini Kill, is that the drum machine rules. Each of Feminist Sweepstakes' 13 songs plinks along the ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Le Tigre music CDs
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, and galvanizing ...
| | Le Tigre This Island CD (2004)
Le Tigre songs
$8.49 With 2004's THIS ISLAND, original "riot grrl" Kathleen Hanna and friends unleash another blast of political electro-pop, this time on a major label. The vibe here is smoother than previous Le Tigre outings; a welcome heaping of sugar in the sociologically acidic coffee. On-key and demure, the gang's philosophical agenda takes a backseat to feel-good craziness backed up by funk beats groovy enough--and synth lines catchy enough--to power a dozen slumber/dance parties.
The group's allegiance to the sounds of the early 1980s is officially unveiled with a cover of the Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited" ...
| | Sufjan Stevens Illinois CD (2005)
Le Tigre album
$12.19 The second entry from sui generis singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his absurdly ambitious project to make a record for every state in America outdistances even 2003's superb GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN in scope and beauty. A sweeping paean to the Lincoln state, ILLINOIS weaves together history, personal confession, and detail-filled scenarios with chamber folk, expansive orchestral pop, and back-porch pastoral settings for a stunningly progressive indie gem that sound like Brian Wilson, Stereolab, and Neil Young holding hands in heaven.
Remarkably, in its intricate, gorgeously crafted surfaces, ILLINOIS lives up to its aims. In addition to its symphonic grandeur, the album also showcases Stevens's heartland folk, and some of the album's most shimmering moments are its most spare. "John Wayne Gacy, Jr.," for instance, is an absorbing narrative that features Stevens's sweet tenor couched by guitar, piano, and backing vocals. "Casimir Pulaski Day," similarly, rides a rootsy banjo and guitar groove while Stevens unfurls image-rich lyrics over a lilting melody. Witty, audacious, and moving, ILLINOIS ...
| | Yeah Yeah Yeah's Show Your Bones CD (2006)
Le Tigre CD music
$10.39 SHOW YOUR BONES, the Yeah Yeah Yeah's 2006 sophomore full-length, was one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The band's fiery, unhinged 2003 major-label debut, FEVER TO TELL, yanked the band out of NYC clubs and onto the world stage, and while most of the musical cognoscente anticipated a sonic shake-up of some sort for the sequel, in exactly what direction the YYYs would head was a source of much speculation. Would they follow Liars into the murky depths of willfully alienating avant noise, or would they Liz-Phair themselves right into glossy commercial irrelevance?
In fact, it's neither of the above. As tracks like "Gold Lion," "Honeybear," and "Cheated Hearts" show, the band clearly isn't out to ruffle any feathers, but they're ...

| | Chaka Khan Classikhan CD (2004)
Le Tigre album
$8.29 Chaka Khan is backed by a nicely understated jazz combo and the subtly seductive strings of the London Symphony Orchestra on this finely tuned set of classic jazz standards and pop tunes. Though Khan is not best known for her laid-back approach to the vocal arts, here she displays both taste and restraint. The track list runs the gamut of styles, from Willie Nelson's country classic "Crazy," here given a Ray Charles-style makeover, to the macabre "Is That All There Is," best known in its Peggy Lee interpretation. However, Khan shows her true mettle on the twin James Bond themes of "Diamonds Are Forever" and "Goldfinger," giving the British belter Shirley Bassey a run for her money with incendiary versions of both songs. Elsewhere, Khan's jazzy rendition of the Lulu hit "To Sir with Love" demonstrates both her elastic vocal prowess and her continuing ability to hit some stratospheric high notes. Classy, romantic, and lushly orchestrated, CLASSIKHAN reveals Chaka Khan's mature vocal talents at a peak.

| | Love That's Last: A Wholly Hypnographic & Disturbing Work Regarding Oxbow CD (2006)
Le Tigre music CDs
$12.85 In the late '80s, Oxbow mangled the underground's fragile psyche with the release of nerve-fraying LPs. With each recording, they channeled a harrowing psychic landscape through a devastating gamut of stark murder-blues, serpentine slide-guitar torture, and churning predatory noise. "Love That's Last" and its companion DVD documentary, "Music For Adults" serve as an A/V re-introduction to a band that has no equal and a love that has no name.

| | Mike Pollard Hickerbilly CD (2006)
Le Tigre music CDs
$14.15 Born in Bowmanville, Ontario, Mike Pollard was the youngest of three children. Mike grew up in the tiny hamlet of Crooked Creek where rural life was all he knew. From a very early age, country music was a huge part of his life. Every radio in the Pollard house was tuned into the local country station and classic country music was always spinning on the record player. When weekends rolled around there were always family gatherings and the guitars and old country songs fueled Mike’s love for it even more. At eighteen, he taught himself to play the guitar and by the age of nineteen, was writing his own songs. Very soon, Mike Pollard was singing songs to anyone who would listen and eventually put his first band together called “Jimmy Haystack and the Redneck Rodeo”. After a couple years, the group changed their name to “One Horse Town”. Mike played rhythm guitar and was lead singer until the group disbanded in 2002. In the spring of 2003, after some time away, Mike Pollard returned to the stage as a solo artist. In the spring of 2004, Mike released his independant debut album, 'Rural Roots', which included 8 self-penned songs. The album was a hit to fans and critics alike. 'Rural Roots', was the second best local/indie seller of 2005 and came in third of all local/indie release in 2006. The album receives airplay on radio stations from Newfoundland to Australia. The success of this album found Mike busier than ever as the demand for his performances grew larger. His follow up album entitled, 'Hickerbilly', was released in November of 2006. The new album features another 8 Pollard originals and has proved to be another hit to fans. After only 6 weeks of sales it turned out to be the number one local/independant release of all 2006! This album is enjoying success all around the globe and has been consistently taking the number one spot on local sales charts since it's release. Mike currently resides in Colborne, Ontario, where he enjoys the quiet life in the country as well as a good place to write songs and make his music. He is a proud member of the Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) as well as the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN). In 2006, he started his own business; 'Flaming Hooves Publishing and Promotions'. Mike Pollard has shared the stage with many of Canada's top legends and spent time in Nashville in 2006 networking and even performing on Broadway. He has always been dedicated to tradition and is always striving to provide excellent entertainment to his fans with his multi-talented band, 'Stetson'. At 29 years ...
