Yvonne Elliman is remembered for her hit from Saturday Night Fever, the luminous "If I Can't Have You," and that's about it. That's too bad because she was a pretty nice soft rock/easy disco singer who released some fine records in the '70s. 20th Century Masters: The Best of Yvonne Elliman shows her gentle way with a ballad on the lovely cover of the Eagles' "Best of My Love," her breathy take on the Neil Sedaka-penned "Baby Don't Let It Mess With Your Mind," and her first hit, "I Don't Know How to Love Him," from the cast album of Jesus Christ Superstar. It also shows she could handle a sexy groove on her sly cover of Barbara Lewis' "Hello Stranger" and the Barry and Robin Gibb-written "Love Me." She wasn't always handed the best of material to work with as the cheesy "Love Pains" and "Everything Must Change" show, but even on these tracks her winning charms rule the day. The only thing this collection doesn't do is improve on the best-of disc Polydor released in 1997 and has since deleted. That set included her stunning cover of the Who's "I Can't Explain" as well as a sweet Artie Wayne ballad, "From the Inside," and two rock-hard takes on Traffic's "Can't Find My Way Home." In fact these three songs are better than anything on 20th Century Masters apart from "If I Can't Have You." Why they weren't included is a mystery. Maybe even a tragedy. Elliman certainly deserves better and so does anyone who is looking for a comprehensive overview of her career. Guess you better check your local used CD shop or eBay before you buy this misguided collection. ~ Tim Sendra

20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection songs
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. ...

THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION, though not as thorough as the excellent two-disc set GOLD (released a year prior), is a handy overview of the Commodores' career, beginning with 1974's "Machine Gun" and concluding with 1985's "Nightshift." The only Top Ten R&B hits not included here are "Sail On," and a couple of later '80s cuts, so ...

Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 1: KLUV is an impressive 25-track collection of seasonal favorites assembled from a wide range of eras and genres. Highlights include Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run," Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" and Gene Autry's "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"; while not a definitive holiday collection, it includes enough hits and obscurities alike to be a worthwhile purchase nevertheless. ~ Marvin Jolly
Volume two of Collectables' Ultimate Christmas Album gathers more classic pop and rock holiday tunes, including the Beach Boys' "Little Saint Nick," Gene Autry's "Here Comes Santa Claus," and Diana Ross & the Supremes' "White Christmas." Most of this volume's best-known tracks are by traditional pop crooners, such as Dean Martin's "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!," Bing Crosby's "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas," and Burl Ives' "Holly Jolly Christmas." However, less-familiar tracks like the Echelons' "A Christmas Long Ago (Jingle Jingle)," Augie Rios' "Donde Esta Santa Claus," and Barry Gordon's "Nuttin' for Christmas" prevent the collection from being too predictable. It's not exactly a straightforward holiday-hits compilation, ...
