Collecting items from their various other Turkish albums, Arc here has a nice, single-disc retrospective of previous work in the area. The music itself covers the spectrum, from timeless gypsy love songs to 20th century oud and saz pieces in a light classical form. Much of the work is excellent, with nods to tradition as well as the present, and inarguable skills on the part of the performers. At the same time, the Turkish horns can get somewhat grating to the unaccustomed ear, so tread with caution. Listen particularly for the saz of Huseyin Turkmenler, the vocals from Vivienne Dogan Corringham (also from Noor Shimal), and the shawm of Mustafa Sahin. As with many such compilations, digging for the sources of the music might be the more fruitful enterprise in the long run, but this is a nice sampler, and a starting point for any such exploration. ~ Adam Greenberg Bazaar Istanbul: Music Of Turkey Music Bazaar Istanbul: Music Of Turkey Songs Bazaar Istanbul: Music Of Turkey Review

Bazaar Istanbul: Music Of Turkey album
$16.45 The Blank Stares sprang into being one startlingly hot afternoon in a basement on Mott Street in Manhattan. The year was 1999 and the stars would not return to that particular alignment for another 3,000 years. Something mysterious and otherworldly was set into motion that day – something that would alter perceptions of reality for generations to come. The road of a Blank Stare is more like a rock-strewn unbeaten path. The Stares went though a few early line-up changes before settling on the current three piece musical alliance. Not only did this clarify and strengthen the sound, but now the whole band could fit into the Blank Stares Road Chopper. The side car only seats two, you do the math. The Chopper revved through the Big Apple and various outlying areas along the Eastern Seaboard. During the latest collection of interviews for the new tell-all Blank Stares biography Carlos’ former landlord said, “The only thing louder than that Chopper was the all night jams and recording sessions I heard in the back of the house.” It was this explosive atmosphere that led The Blank Stares to pen songs about space-born messiahs, insomnia, government paranoia and first dates involving being thrown down stairs. No one said greatness came easyNo one said that. The Blank Stares consists of Carlos DeLeon of the Texas DeLeons. He trained for his eventual staredom by fronting bands such as The Jinkies and Meat Lovers Pizza ...
