NEW YORK RECORDINGS features the work of jazz musician Emmett Berry.
Although active for decades as a sideman, trumpeter Emmett Berry apparently never made a record as a leader. In 1994 the Lone Hill Jazz label brought out The New York Recordings as a sort of posthumous tribute album. This music materialized on May 22, 1958, when drummer Bobby Donaldson put together an eight-piece session band for the World Wide record label with Berry front-lining alongside cornetist Rex Stewart, clarinetist Buster Bailey, and trombonist Vic Dickenson. Drawing upon the standard traditional jazz repertoire of blues, Dixieland, and swing tunes, this hot little band also handled four melodies from the Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway musical Oklahoma! Highlights include Red Richards' piano throughout the session, a campy handling of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" with Bucky Pizzarelli playing the banjo, and "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," a feature for Vic Dickenson's wonderfully frowsy trombone. This eminently satisfying album also contains some of the very best clarinet improvisations that Buster Bailey ever performed in front of a microphone. ~ arwulf arwulf

Horace Silver is not only important because of his contributions as a pianist/composer; he's also been a first-rate talent scout (much like Miles Davis, Chick Corea, and Art Blakey). From Donald Byrd to Joe Henderson to Tom Harrell, so many of Silver's sidemen have come to be recognized as serious jazz heavyweights. The hard bopper led his share of five-star groups -- especially in the '50s and '60s -- but if any one Silver combo went down in history as his most important, it was the 1959-1964 quintet with trumpeter Blue Mitchell, tenor saxman Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor, and drummer Roy Brooks. Leading a tight, cohesive quartet, bass player/leader Leon Lee Dorsey's second album is devoted to eight of his originals and one very fine standard, "Old Folks." His first album was 180 degrees the other way, almost entirely devoted to originals. The play list reflects Dorsey's confidence that as played by his talented group, his material is of sufficient interest that it can sustain almost an entire CD. As to the artistry of the players on this session, there is no doubt. With respect to Dorsey's compositional skills, the jury is still out. Much of the material on this disc brings back recordings made during the 1950s and 1960s by any number of good small jazz groups. "The Collector" and "Baptism" recall the Modern Jazz Quartet, with vibist Bryan Carrott and pianist Carlton Holmes assuming the roles of Milt Jackson and John Lewis, respectively. The most adventurous quartet in contemporary jazz has met its visual match in Peter Max, the legendary pop artist who, as it turns out, is a huge fan of the band. Russell Ferrante and company could probably feel at home naming any of their innovative, loose-spirited albums after one of Max's paintings, but Altered State definitely fits the vibe here -- which is all odd meters, emotionally provocative melodic lines, and unexpected harmonies. Max, in turn, took a few preliminary tracks and was inspired to create the cool, splotchy cover art. The hourlong musical affair won't cause any permanent mental and emotional departures, but there are a lot of odd and spirited surprises along the way. "Suite 15," featuring the funky interplay of Bob Mintzer's aggressive sax and Ferrante's power chording (not to mention one of Ferrante's classic lush piano solos), is classic Jackets stuff all the way.
