Ave End
$6.75 On CRYSTAL PLANET Satch provides his fans with exactly what they've come to expect: crunching riffs, soaring melodies, chord changes and solos from heaven. He deviates little from such past releases as THE EXTREMIST and SURFING WITH THE ALIEN, and as the saying goes: "if it ain't broke". That's not to say he doesn't stay contemporary, as "Raspberry Jam Delta-V" effectively dabbles in electronica as subtle background noise.
"Love Thing" is a beautiful ballad and potential single, and Satch is able to make the guitar "talk". There are also elements of funk ("A Piece Of Liquid") and metal ("With Jupiter In Mind"). But his skills shine through the most when he shreds, and nobody does it better. Quite simply, the man is a virtuoso and probably one of the most influential Instrumental Rock artists of his generation. He shows he can play at the speed of light while fitting all these speedy solos into the context of the song. CRYSTAL PLANET continues the legacy of a man who shows that ...

Ave End
$10.35 Prolific director John Carpenter takes on the vampire genre in his action-horror film VAMPIRES. Bitter, tough-as-nails vampire hunter Jack Crow (James Woods) leads a specialized team, funded by no less than the Vatican, that is dedicated to destroying the race of vampires that inhabit the earth. The team is successful, and becomes lazy in its success, eventually falling victim to an elaborate ambush set up by a powerful master vampire. Crow and two others of his team are the only survivors, and are determined to get revenge for the massacre. Carpenter takes the genre to new heights with powerful action scenes, nifty vampire-killing weapons and great special effects. ...

| | Brian Jonestown Massacre Their Satanic Majesties Second Request CD (1996)
Ave End
$11.39 Sophomore album from 1996 does, as promised, spring forth from the Rolling Stones' long-underrated 1967 masterpiece Their Satanic Majesties Request, copping not only Mick and Keith's leering bad-boy attitude but also their their rock-and-roll-circus spirit.
Truth in advertising: the Brian Jonestown Massacre's sophomore album does, as promised, spring forth from the Rolling Stones' long-underrated 1967 masterpiece Their Satanic Majesties Request, copping not only Mick and Keith's leering bad-boy attitude but also their their rock-and-roll-circus spirit. Opening with the brilliant "All Around You (Intro)," a tongue-in-cheek guide to the mind-altering journey ahead, the record is a kaleidoscopic, drug-fueled freakout -- like the Stones' namesake album, Second Request is painted by Eastern drones and psychedelic tangents, each track bubbling with dozens of sound effects including sitars, mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos, tablas, ...
| | Go Ska Go CD (1995)
Ave End
$25.59 A compilation of 19 sizzling cuts, all drawn exclusively from the Studio One archives and boasting both popular favorites and rarities. There are some drawbacks, though. The digital remastering isn't the greatest, but all the tracks come courtesy of master tapes, not scratchy vinyl, so points there. The sequencing is a bit eccentric as well, leaping from steaming instrumentals to more down-tempo vocal tracks with little regard for mood or rhythms. Even odder, the sleeve notes discuss songs and artists not included on this record. However, the music makes up for these flaws. There's a fistful of frenetic instrumentals featuring the likes of Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, and Rico Rodriguez, and, aptly enough, a pair of songs from Skatalite vocalist-to-be Jackie Opel. There's the scrumptious "Simmer Down" by the Wailers, and two more ...

| | Alicia Keys Songs In A Minor CDs (2001) Import; Limited Edition
Ave End
$20.95 Alicia Keys won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. SONGS IN A MINOR won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "Fallin'" won the 2002 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song.
The Hong Kong import edition includes a bonus disc of remixes and live material; 30 tracks total.
Picture Roberta Flack with hip-hop trimmings or D'Angelo coming at the world from a female perspective and you get an idea of the immense talent welling up from musical prodigy Alicia Keys. Blessed with a soulful voice, mature-beyond-her-years songwriting, and a classically trained command of piano, it's no wonder music mogul Clive Davis brought the 20-year old performer over from Arista as one of the flagship artists for his new label J Records. Keys displays impressive range on this primarily self-penned debut that finds her taking part in arranging and/or production on every cut, once again redeeming Davis's instincts.
Besides the well-earned buzz for the gripping love-and-loathe single "Fallin'," Keys earns high marks for fusing rap beats and vintage Aretha on a confidently delivered cover of Prince's "How Come You Don't Call Me." Elsewhere, the native New Yorker's flow finds her traversing the same ground as early-'70s Stevie Wonder on the thought-provoking "The Life," while "Goodbye" proves to be the quintessential Quiet Storm kiss-off. Keys wraps up SONGS with a sanctified mix of stride piano, lush strings, and gospel-flavored back-up singers on "Lovin' U."
2002 limited edition of 2001 album comes with a bonus disc featuring remixes & live material. Bonus CD tracklisting, 'Girlfriend' (Remix), 'Gangsta Lovin' W/ Eve, 'Fallin' (Remix W/ Busta Rhymes), 'A Woman's Worth' (Remix), 'Butterflyz' (Remix), 'How Come You Don't Call Me' (Neptune's Remix), ...
