Back2back: Brothers Johnson And Kool & The Gang album
$8.15 Loose Ends was still in peak form on the late-'80s Zagora. "Slow Down" was an R&B chart topper and huge club smash, and they had two other songs become moderate hits. Loose Ends had found the right mix of teasing vocals, clever lyrical hooks, tight production, and good arrangements that weren't relentless in their backbeats, yet were also groove-oriented enough for dancers. ~ Ron Wynn

| | Solomon Burke Change Is Gonna Come CD (1986)
Back2back: Brothers Johnson And Kool & The Gang music CDs
$13.89 While he wasn't scoring chart hits anymore, Burke hadn't lost any of his prowess by the mid-'80s. He cut one of the decade's great soul statements for Rounder in 1985. It's available on CD, and should be a revelation for anyone unaware of Burke's singing and performing zeal. His oral narratives were as smashing and memorable as his vocals, and the assembled band included a super three-piece horn section led by alto, tenor and baritone ...
| | Illinois Jacquet Flying Home: The Best Of Verve Years CD (1994)
Back2back: Brothers Johnson And Kool & The Gang songs
$12.49 Tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet recorded some of his finest early work on Verve in the 1950s, and a sampling of those recordings is presented on this 20-track set. Named after Jacquet's signature swing-boogie tune "Flying Home" (which appears as the last track here), THE BEST OF THE VERVE YEARS features the artist primarily in big-band settings.
Jacquet has a fat tone and an impressive technical range. He also plays with lots of guts, pushing his horn through a variety of approaches from lyrical to aggressive. His conception seems to incorporate swing, blues, bebop, and proto-R&B all at once, and this distinguishing hallmark of his style is evident even on these early sides. Fun, vibrant, and full of life, Jacquet's performances here are bound to please fans or anyone interested in the mainstream jazz of the period.
Principally recorded at Fine Sound Studios, New York and Radio Recorders, Los Angeles, California between 1951 and 1958. Includes liner notes by Brian Priestley.
This is part of Verve's Jazz At The Philharmonic series.
Personnel: Illinois Jacquet (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Illinois Jacquet; Freddie Green, Kenny Burrell (guitar); Earle Warren (alto saxophone); Cecil Payne (baritone saxophone, brass); Harry "Sweets" Edison, Roy Eldridge, Elmon Wright, Lamar Wright Jr. (trumpet); John "Johnny" Adriano Acea, Johnny Ace (piano); Count Basie, Wild Bill Davis (organ); Al Bartee, Johnny Williams , Osie Johnson (drums); Chano Pozo (congas); Ernie Henry (alto saxophone); Count ...
| | Angela Winbush Ultimate Collection CD (2001)
Back2back: Brothers Johnson And Kool & The Gang album
$11.99 Recorded between 1981 and 1996. Includes liner notes by David Nathan.
Digitally remastered by Gavin Lurssen (The Mastering Lab, Hollywood, California).
While the title of The Ultimate Collection may be overstating the matters somewhat, this 17-track compilation does come very close to fulfilling the title's promise. This compilation concentrates on Angela Winbush's late-'80s recordings for Mercury, dipping into the early '80s and early '90s on occasion, so some may complain that it's too focused on a particular era, yet that helps the collection, since that's when Winbush was at her best. Relying on single versions, radio mixes, and edits (though there are several album versions here, as well), this gives a good portrait of what ...
