Recorded live in 1975 and unreleased until now, this moving session by jazz singer Irene Kral offers up some of her most heartfelt renditions of many tunes associated with Irene over the years, plus a few surprises not recorded before. This wonderful live recording was performed at The Catamaran Hotel in San Diego, California and features Irene Kral with Mike Wofford on piano, Bob Magnusson on bass, and Tony Morillo on drums."Yet she remained an insider's favorite. Singing in a clear, diamond-hard voice, she offered a dose of the truth: love stories with no lacey trimmings, torch songs without self-pity, impeccably sculpted into neat vocal packages. Stereo Review critic Peter Reilly would call her singing "as classically pure and humanly radiant as a Renoir painting ... as fine and lasting as an Hermès wallet or a Rolls-Royce car." "But in 1975, when she made the splendid live recording you now hold, Kral was a Van Nuys housewife in the midst of a grueling battle with cancer." "But when Kral died at forty-six on August 15, 1978, no one could say she hadn't fulfilled her musical promise. This CD, culled from four performances at the Catamaran, a San Diego jazz spot, is Irene Kral at her peak."-James Gavin, New York City, 2003[James Gavin is the author of Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker, published in 2002 by Knopf.]
Personnel: Irene Kral (vocals); Irene Kral; Bob Magnusson (double bass); Tony Marillo (drums); Mike Wofford (piano). Audio Mixer: Rod Nicas. Liner Note Authors: James Gavin; Phil Woods. Recording information: The Catamaran Hotel, San Diego, CA (06/13/1975/06/14/1975). Irene Kral was a gifted singer able to illuminate the essence of each song without a lot of unnecessary frills. Her career, which stretched just over a quarter century prior to her death from cancer in 1978, was a flurry of recording activity following the 1975 release Where Is Love?, a Grammy-nominated duo date with Alan Broadbent that attracted a lot of attention. Sadly, most of her albums lapsed from print following her death, so this previously unreleased live CD, recorded at the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego six months after Where Is Love?, is a welcome addition to her discography. Joined by a superb rhythm section consisting of pianist Mike Wofford, bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Tony Marillo, Kral offers a delightful mix of standards, pop songs, obscurities and novelties. She masters Cole Porter's challenging "Experiment" without a slip, delights in the humor of Dave Frishberg's "Wheelers and Dealers" and Fran Landesman's sarcastic "Nice Weather for Ducks," while venturing into current pop with a crisp bossa nova setting of Stevie Wonder's hit "You Are the Sunshine of My Life." But it is hard to top her haunting interpretation of Lionel Bart's "Where Is Love?" (from the musical Oliver!), a moving performance with sensitive backing by Wofford and a delayed entrance by Magnusson and Marillo. This CD represents Irene Kral at her very best and there is another reason for her fans to celebrate: at least one more unissued performance is in Jazzed Media's holdings with plans for a future release. ~ Ken Dryden
Irene Kral Just For Now Songs Just For Now Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Sweet, sweet, sweet I'm not enough of a jazz aficionado to give this CD a just critique. Suffice to say, I fell in love with Irene Kral's voice for the same reason everyone else did. She captures beautiful subtlety in every song she sings, carrying it through to a satisfying, often touching conclusion. Remarkably, I can find little to distinguish her studio work from this album which is a live performance. It seemed to make little difference to Irene whether she sang to herself or to an audience, and the songs suffered nothing in either setting.
Even though her career was cut short and her catalog relatively small, her legacy is large and inspired. I hope this and all of her albums are around for a long, long time, waiting to be discovered by yet another generation of listeners. runs the gamut of lyracism True to the CD's name, the singer/interpreter of vocal tunes Kral was just a couple of years away from the ultimate close of her "wonderful life" due to cancer. To beat down prior illness and deliver this stunning one night set is incredible in itself, but she really puts the rest of the chanteuse sound-alikes to shame when she opens with an incredibly obscure Cole Porter song (Experiment) and obviously gets the crowd's attention by the 5th song (Rock Me to Sleep).
It misses a star because the run of songs is not as long as alot of live sets and the performers, though they rarely "carry" the notes to the next level are very laidback in their approach to the songs in the later evening. I feel for the undeservedly unrecognized Kral as she examines each song for it's unknown potential and belays it in such lyrical form that only a Nat or Ella could possibly do a better live take. This will undoubtably be given several more stars as she gets a well-deservered listen by adoring fans. I surely hope the film world adopts alot of these in their boy-meets-girl American (ala. Harry Met Sally) cinema, which is the most likely place you will hear such beat-centric music in this fast paced world. Try her studio songs with Junior Mance Trio in the Bridges Over Madison County soundtrack if unsure how rock-steady a performer she can become when approaching a verse. One more listen before I go to bed now and Irene can "Rock Me To Sleep" anytime. Cheers and sweet dreams. Submitted by martin (bedford, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
