So this is what it comes to in the 21st century music business. It's where an artist like Gretchen Wilson comes out of nowhere, skyrockets to the top of the charts with her first single "Redneck Woman," which becomes an anthem, sells millions and millions of copies of her debut album, Here for the Party, releases two more fine offerings -- All Jacked Up and One of the Boys (her best) -- and then gets dropped by her label because she can't duplicate her initial success. To be fair, Wilson never had a chance to sell as many records as her debut again; it was an anomaly that plenty of acts have been party to. (Remember the Counting Crows?). Her final Columbia album is this Greatest Hits package. Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps twice that age--a sly trick for the 18-year-old Swift. There may be a hint of youthfulness to her singing but that's the only hint of girlishness here; her writing--and she had a hand in penning all 13 tracks here, with six of them bearing her solitary credit--is sharply, subtly crafted and the music is softly assured, never pushing its hooks too hard. Jeffrey Othello is an internationally know Author, Activist, Songwriter, and Musician. He's been professional songwriter since 1990, and was the founder and leader of the all-Black rock bands "The Wanted" and "Othello's Revenge". In 1991 he performed on both the Lollapalooza and Gathering of the Tribes festival tours, as well as being featured in a MTV 30-minute News Special entitled "Racism: Points of View", which ran from 1991-1992. He toured and traveled nationally and internationally throughout the 1990s, and in 2002, was nominated for a JPF Songwriter Award. Also in 2002, he signed a licensing deal with producers Bunim-Murray, to provide music for MTV shows like THE REAL WORLD and ROAD RULES. Recently, he was featured in a 2003 exhibit at the National Broadcast Museum, chronicling his work on MTV and his views on racism in the music industry.In 2004 he wrote the book "The Soul of Rock 'N Roll: A History of African Americans in Rock Music", which has been called one of the most entertaining and culturally important books of its kind.
