Purchase Tokyo + 1 CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Moby Wait For Me CD (2009)
Tokyo + 1 album
$13.19 Following the decadent, club-style excursions of 2008's HOTEL, Moby returns for a more contemplative sound on the melancholic WAIT FOR ME. Working through deeply personal material and a more intimate, though at times cinematic, sound palette, the album ranks as among his best in over 10 years.
Moby's most unified and understated album, and all the better for it, WAIT FOR ME is a morose set of elegantly bleary material, quite a shift from the hedonistic club tracks of LAST NIGHT. Dominated by instrumentals, "Shot in the Back of the Head" is the most evocative of the bunch, ...

| | Jeff Bates Rainbow Man CD (2003)
Tokyo + 1 music CDs
$8.29 In the late '90s and early '00s, the country charts saw a rash of successful artists who celebrated their urban and suburban backgrounds. Bucking the trend and recalling the proudly hillbilly legends of years past, Jeff Bates is possessed of a biography seemingly tailor-made to inspire classic country music. The rural Mississippi-bred singer, whose deep, rich baritone often sounds like a wedding of the vocal styles and timbres of George Jones, Charlie Rich, and Tony Joe White, has suffered though abandonment, divorce, prison, racial prejudice (Bates is of mixed heritage), and drug addiction.
Luckily, Bates has been able to turn all his misfortune into autobiographical songs that resonate with a welcome directness and obvious sincerity. However interesting his lyrics may be, his ace in the hole is his voice, the sheer power and resonance of which easily stand toe to toe with the golden pipes of stylistically similar superstars like Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, and Travis Tritt. Matched with a tasteful mix of old- and new-school production values, that voice makes RAINBOW MAN a significant addition to the new traditionalist canon.
Personnel: Mickey Jack Cones (vocals, background vocals); Jeff King (guitar, electric guitar, slide guitar); David Grissom, Jimmy Yeary, Michael Landau, Troy Lancaster ...
| | Perfecto Presents: Sandra Collins CDs (2003)
Tokyo + 1 songs
$15.79 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Sandra Collins.
It's been a while since any mix-CD from the more mainstream side of dance sounded so purposeful, exciting, and vivid as Perfecto Presents: Sandra Collins. Each CD starts with cinematic mood builders -- a device that's been used over and over -- but here, Collins keeps the beats at bay for a perilously long time, especially on the second disc. The tension pays off, as each time we flow into an amazing selection of tracks. Tired names like Moby, BT, and Kosheen show up, but the DJ picks cutting-edge mixes and drops the superstar tracks in ways that work. Disc One has plenty of obvious crowd-pleasers, but any lesser DJ would have trouble making as much out of the tracks as Collins does. Moby's "In This World," building up to the thumping floor-filler "It's Up to You," would usually mean it's time to think about where the after-party is, but Collins buys time by dropping cinematic and trippy sounds to whet our anticipation for the next big thrill. Disc One is only preparation for the perfection of the second disc, where old friends like Humate, Transformer 2, and -- can you believe it? -- Camouflage come off sounding fresher than fresh. It's a slick and trippy ride that ends with ten minutes ...
