Without rock bands like Supergrass life would be a bleaker thing. We don't need many such bands, just a couple here and there to remind us what rock music is really about: exuberance, loud guitars, a catchy melody, a good beat, and attitude. Since the release of 1994's single "Caught by the Fuzz," Supergrass has been churning out a consistently satisfying blend of the aforementioned items, a hopped-up rock blueprint that lifts from the best of Britpop--Bowie, the Beatles, the Buzzcocks, the Stones--yet manages to feel fresh and vital. SUPERGRASS IS 10: THE BEST OF 94-04, a retrospective of the band's first decade, is packed with fun, well-crafted tunes.
Whether on T. Rex-inspired anthems ("Seen the Light"), topsy-turvy pop pastiches ("Mansized Rooster"), electro-boogie new wave ("Kiss of Life"), or absurdly catchy singalongs ("Pumping on Your Stereo"), Supergrass pushes the right buttons. They can groove slowly, as on "Time," or launch a full-on rock assault, as on "Richard III," but at their infectious, hooky best ("All right") they can make even the creakiest listeners feel like they're reliving teenage glories. A distillation of the best the band has to offer, SUPERGRASS IS 10 is an irresistible dose of high-octane rock & roll.

ALL SHOOK UP was produced by George Martin, the genius behind the boards for the Beatles (and was also recorded by longtime Beatle engineer Geoff Emerick). But ALL SHOOK UP isn't any more Beatle-influenced than any other Trick album; in fact, with the exception of the majestic "World's Greatest Lover," which Martin actually arranged, the band mostly nods to other stylistic influences.
For instance, "Just Got Back" has '70s glam touches as well as a big percussion sound reminiscent of Adam and the Ants or Bow Wow Wow. Then the very funny "Baby Loves to Rock" (one of Robin Zander's best vocals ever) manages to reference the Yardbirds, early Led Zeppelin, and the Move. The splendidly titled "I Love You Honey But I Hate Your Friends" is a cross between EXILE-era Stones and the Faces with Rod Stewart. And "High Priest of Rhythmic Noise," fittingly, is heavy on the sound-effects and actually veers in the direction of techno.

Originally released on Track (612002/613002). Released in the U.S. on Decca (4950/74950) in 1968.
One of the Who's classics, THE WHO SELL-OUT found the band following the Beatles' lead into concept territory while slyly commenting on the new direction as overtly commercial via its title, its cover art, and the inclusion of many fake advertisements between its tracks. Ironically, the group were involved with real advertisements--some of which are included in this box--at the time of the SELL-OUT sessions. The album has held up over the years--certainly meriting mention with other behemoths of British concept psych like SGT. PEPPER'S, DISRAELI GEARS, and THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN. The record consistently finds footing in the upper reaches of critical all-time best lists.

The veteran R&B/smooth jazz guitarist's Heads Up debut once again captures the always engaging, melodic, and easy grooving magic that has defined his career. This time, rather than simply gather a bunch of likeable tunes to show off his electric and acoustic versatility, he's in a tribute mode. 97th & Columbus is the address of the Manhattan nightclub Mikell's, which was a traditional and contemporary jazz hothouse during Powell's early- and mid-'80s developmental days. Hot new acts were often discovered there, and everyone from John Scofield to George Benson dropped by to jam or watch. Powell celebrates the club's sense of history and shedding with odes both direct and not so obvious.
