5 stars Do Not Be Afraid Of This CD
Do not be afraid of this CD if you are an Andrew Hill fan and if you like Dusk and Beautiful Day you will love this CD. This not an old reissues or some Bootleg. It is a new record that was done as part of Hill’s winning the Jazzpar prize a major jazz award that is given in Denmark. This CD is part of that prize. It consists of performances from a series of concerts that Hill Performed when he went to Demark to claim the prize. The recordings took place in April of 2003. The line up is Hill on piano, Scott Colley on Bass, Nasheet Waits on drums. They are joined by 5 European horn players Staffan Svensson trumpet, Klaus Lohrer, bass trombone & tuba, Peter Fuglsang alto sax, clarinet & bass clarinet, Thomas Agergaard tenor sax & flute and Liudas Mockunas, soprano sax & Baritone sax. With a guest vocal appearance by Lenora Zenzalai on track # 5 Hermano Frere. The music is all Hills and it is just what you would expect from him. All jagged lines and dark tonal clusters. As always his music starts off free then becomes grounded then goes back to being free. It always takes me a couple listening to appreciate his sound but it is always worth the time. Like his last two CD’s this one will make a lot of top ten lists. The higher price is due to the fact this is a Import but CD Universe is the only place you can find it in America and the overseas sites charge $20.00 or more. So this is a deal.

Andrew Hill Dance With Death CD  (1968) Remastered

Day The World Stood Still album
CD $9.49  3 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Andrew Hill's Dance of Death, recorded in 1968 with a stellar band, was not issued until 1980. In the late 1960s, Blue Note was no longer the most adventurous of jazz labels. While certain titles managed to scrape through -- Eddie Gale's Ghetto Music did but only because Francis Wollf personally financed it -- many didn't. The label was firmly in the soul-jazz groove by then, and Hill's music, always on the edge, was deemed too outside for the label's roster. Musically, this is Hill at his most visionary. From hard- and post bop frames come modal and tonal inquiries of staggering complexity. Accompanied by trumpeter Charles Tolliver, saxophonist Joe Farrell, drummer Billy Higgins and bassist Victor Sproles, Hill engages, seemingly, all of his muses at once. Check out the sinister ...

This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter ...

ANDREW! finds the avant-garde composer and pianist Andrew Hill following up his landmark 1964 LP, POINT OF DEPARTURE, with a more flowing quintet session, featuring the estimable vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and Sun Ra tenor saxophonist John Gilmore (in a rare appearance outside of the Arkestra). This is the Blue Note sound of the '60s at its best, cutting edge ...

One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, gratuitous moments but rather significant chunks of solo/lead space. Holland's ...

Live In Asbury Park
Clarence Clemons Live In Asbury Park CD  (2002)

Day The World Stood Still songs
CD $13.45  4 stars Audio Samples
Recorded live at The Stone Pony, Asbury Park, New Jersey on September 2-3, 2001. It seems Clarence Clemons has been playing a lesser role with each new Bruce Springsteen and the $E Street Band tour. It could be his faltering health (hip replacement, detached retina) or the fact that Springsteen is coming up with songs that don't seem to call for much sax anymore. Either way, Clemons gets plenty of blowing time leading his own septet. On Live From Asbury Park, he tackles three rare Springsteen originals; an instrumental version of "Small Things," the similarly unreleased "Savin' Up," and the rollicking showpiece "Paradise by the C." On the latter tune, Clemons seems to run out of breath a bit, and his bandmates don't seem to able to support him very well. This tune probably should have been left off. Celmons' originals vary between your average-but-fun bar band ...

Sometime late in the last century, the proverbial "friend of a friend" invited three young refugees from Northern California to provide music for her gallery opening in Los Feliz Village in Los Angeles. Instead of turning up with two turntables and a microphone, they brought their guitars and a wealth of pop smarts, little knowing ...
