Personnel: Diane Delin (violin); Diane Delin; Dennis Luxion (piano). Audio Mixer: John Larson. Liner Note Author: Greg Pasenko. Recording information: Tone Zone, Chicago, IL (07/21/2003/07/22/2003). Photographers: Robert Pasenko; Jack Frisch. Arranger: Dennis Luxion. Violinist Diane Delin has a "legitimate" classical tone on her instrument and improvises in an unhurried fashion. Pianist Dennis Luxion works well with her, displaying both classical technique and the willingness to push both himself and the violinist. Together they perform two standards (including a delightful opening version of "My Melancholy Baby") and nine originals, ranging from introspective ballads to the more straight-ahead "Awakening." There are times when the music is a bit dry, but those moments pass quickly and are overshadowed by the fine ballad "Patience," the interplay between the players on the non-blues "Lou's Blues," and the charming "Tangold." This is a set that should particularly interest classical listeners who wish to get gradually into jazz. ~ Scott YanowJazzTimes (p.94) - "Delin and Luxion work with the subtleties possible in that medium emotional range, throwing rhythmic accents at unexpected notes...reaching for distant harmonies without disrupting the surface-level musical fabric.' | | Will Downing Classique CD (2009)
Duality
$14.39 Audio Mixers: Tip Wyman; Jeff Kaman; Ray Bardani. Audio Remasterer: Chris Gehringer. The title of Will Downing's 2009 effort, CLASSIQUE, produced by the artist and Rex Rideout, may be a bit misleading: it is not a compilation but a brand-spanking new collection of contemporary jazz-inflected R&B--in other words, classic Downing. The album's first single, "Something Special"--with its hand drums, loops, and slippery flute flitting around a well-placed, subtle horn section--is at its core a popping midtempo love song. Elsewhere, his cover of Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More Baby" reveals just how deep the master's influence is on Downing. He may not have the full depth of White's baritone, but he gets close, and his expressiveness and emotional connection to the song make it shine. The completely old-school Marvin Gaye ballad "Baby I'm for Real" features a duet appearance by Phil Perry. It's convincing and utterly gorgeous. But not only do the covers work here; Downing's originals connect too--and not just the aforementioned ...
