Horror-meister John Carpenter teams Kurt Russell's outstanding performance with incredible visuals to build this chilling version of the classic. Features stunning special effects. MacReady (Kurt Russell) and his team of twelve Antarctic researches unearth and inadvertently defrost a hideous, 100,000-year-old alien life form. Havoc ensues as the isolated scientists struggle with a foe that is a shape-shifting misanthrope. The remaining men are soon faced with the task of determining who's who in order to ensure their survival. Stunning visual effects, an eerie score by Ennio Morricone, and director John (HALLOWEEN) Carpenter's familiarity with spine-tingling material make this a gruesome nail-biter. This is a remake of the 1951 Howard Hawks/Christian Nyby classic, but is much more in keeping with the John W. Campbell, Jr. story on which it is based. Based on both the short story by John W. Campbell, Jr. and the 1951 film produced by Howard Hawks, THE THING is John Carpenter's stunning masterpiece of horror. A group of weary scientists enduring the winter in an isolated camp deep in Antarctica chance upon an alien spacecraft buried in the ice. Near the strange craft is the body of an alien being, frozen solid. Thinking they have made the find of a lifetime, the scientists bring the alien body back to camp and thaw it out. The alien awakens, not in the best of moods, and proceeds to take over the identities of the scientists, one by one, body and all. Helicopter pilot MacCready (Kurt Russell) must lead the surviving men in discovering who among them is human and who is not and how they can destroy "the thing" before it takes them all and moves on to the heavily populated mainland and the rest of humanity. Rob Bottin supplies the awe-inspiring special effects of the creature in its many, ever-changing forms. The effects were groundbreaking at the time and hold up flawlessly over the passing years. But Carpenter does not rely solely on special effects, utilizing his spectacular cast, which includes Wilford Brimley and Richard Dysart, to create three dimensional characters enduring an unthinkable situation. The score from Ennio Morricone is understated, yet increases the tense mood tenfold. Shooting was difficult and done in below freezing conditions, but despite the discomfort the cast and crew produced a truly terrifying film that will stand the test of time. THE THING is surely one of Carpenter's definitive films and a true horror classic. THE THING was based on the short story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, Jr. It was previously the basis for the 1951 film, THE THING (a.k.a. THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD), which was produced by Howard Hawks and directed by Christian Nyby. This 1982 version is more loyal to the source material and restores the creature's ability to masquerade as any living creature.
Director Carpenter gave whiz kid special effects artist Rob Bottine total freedom when creating the concepts for the alien creature's many forms. The result was an Academy Award and effects that still hold up over time.

Thing Movie Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) A classic... An excellent horror movie who played with your phobies... Submitted by Flamme27 (Québec, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A True Sci-fi Classic! Carpenter does a great job of mixing suspense, horror and just the right amount of comedy to create a Sci-fi flick that still stands up against most anything out here today. And to this day, my brothers and I still wonder what would have happened if there'd been a movie called "AVT". Submitted by tne1219 (Wash. DC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Entertaining When this movie first hit theaters, I was excited about the prospect of seeing a remake of the original classic. At that time, I enjoyed my theater experience and thought it was quite good. Well, 20+ years later I finally got around to buying the DVD and have watched it twice. I still find it reasonably entertaining but I have to say that the special effects are VERY amateurish and detract significantly from the quality of this movie. On the upside, the cast and retooled storyline are quite good. I’d REALLY like to see a current remake with updated CGI effects. Submitted by Brian P (Fremont, CA) Was This Review Helpful? $10.25 John Nada (Roddy Piper) is a quiet loner, a drifter who gets work where ever he can find it. While working on a construction site in L.A. and sleeping in a vagrant community at night, John stumbles upon a secret society of alien beings who pose as wealthy and powerful people in human society. John joins a rebel group commited to exposing this conspiracy, and becomes their reluctant leader and the only hope of the human race. Former wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper is outstanding as the unassuming hero, playing the role with understated shock at what he uncovers and stubborn courage when he confronts it. Director John Carpenter laces the film with his trademark blend of humor and horror, making aliens that are hideously arrogant, greedy, and easy to hate, while the humans are confused and desperate in their struggle against them. The world looks a little different at the end of THEY LIVE, and one will never look at billboards, money, or sunglasses the same way again. The film contains the longest, and perhaps most realistic, fist fight in film history. Paying homage to INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, the film was based on the short story EIGHT O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING by Ray Nelson.

| | Passion Of The Christ DVDs (2004)
Thing review
$21.39 THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST depicts the last 12 hours of the life of Jesus of Nazareth (Jim Caviezel), beginning with his betrayal by Judas Iscariot (Luca Lionello) and ending with his crucifixion and subsequent resurrection. Directed by Mel Gibson (BRAVEHEART)--who funded the film himself and co-wrote the screenplay--PASSION uses flashbacks to substantiate a handful of pertinent moments in Jesus' life and teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount and the Last Supper, as well as his relationships with his mother and his disciples. Still, the drama focuses on the seemingly endless torture inflicted upon Jesus by Roman soldiers at the urging of the Jewish crowd that considers him a blasphemer, despite the attempts of a sympathetic Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov) to spare him from death. The faint of heart should be prepared for the brutal, barbaric beatings that Christ endures. Maia Morgenstern, Monica Bellucci, and Hristo Jivkov are touching as Mary, Magdalene, and John respectively, who are devastated by Jesus' fate yet aware that they can do nothing to change it. Performed in Aramaic and Latin with English subtitles, Gibson's labor of love is sure to prompt discussion and debate as to historical and Biblical fact.
