The second half of the '70s were a good time for The Kinks, as they had finally become a consistently successful draw in America. The live ONE FOR THE ROAD followed on the heels of LOW BUDGET, an album conceived by Ray Davies as a half-live and half-in-studio effort. If one song sums up the Davies brothers' contrasting personalities, it is ROAD's version of "All Day And All Of The Night." Dave Davies big-fisted chordal riffs give way to his brother Ray's brief trip into the light camp of a "Day-O"-style sing-along.
ONE FOR THE ROAD captures an era when The Kinks reclaimed their sleek muscularity, leaving behind the theatrics that had been a feature of their act in the first half of the decade. They easily mix newer numbers ("Attitude," "Superman," "Misfits") with vintage chestnuts ("David Watts," Victoria," "Stop your Sobbing"). The Kinks' live albums present a compelling portrait of the band across the decades, and ROAD stands up nicely alongside both LIVE KINKS and EVERYBODY'S IN SHOW-BIZ.

Must have CD The Kinks rock on this live disc recorded at arguably the hight of their artistry. The prelude guitar solo for Celluloid Hero's alone is worth having this disc. I liked this one a whole lot in 1981 and still do to this day. Buy it! Submitted by Greg (West Windsor, NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
The way rock should be. The Kinks were awesome. The CD shows their importance in the 60's British Invasion and their subsequent success. Lyrics, music, voice--it's the way rock should be but can never be reprised. Any fan of the movies will appreciate Celluloid Heroes. No collection is complete without this CD. A suprising gem Didn't know much about this cd....hadn't heard anything by the Kinks in a long while......been into live recordings lately and let me tell you this is a good one! From opening to finish, the singing is great, the playing is excellent and the showmanship is top notch.....a great live recording from a very underrated band. This is how a live cd is supposed to sounce Can't say enough about this great live CD. It really does capture The Kinks at or near a live performing peak. Loved it in 1980, love it today. Along with all the other great definitive Kinks studio recordings this one is essential for capturing the hard rocking, live performance version of the band that never really got captured on record in their earlier glory years.
Also, unlike the studio version of the band that was completely dominated by the songwriting brilliance of Ray Davies, this one captures the importance of Dave Davies in cultivating the "Kinks" sound. Very underrated guitar man that other Davies was. Theres a reason why The Who were trying to replicate that Kinks hard rock sound back in the early days and a lot of that can be attributed directly to Dave Davies and what he was able to accomplish. Frida's second post-ABBA solo album followed fairly closely on the heels of Something's Going On, but was more ambitious. With Steve Lillywhite producing, the singer stretches out on a string of memorable and bold songs that have her generating more power and excitement than the prior album; she clearly loves the ...
