Asian Spa features ten new age instrumentals that fuse Asian-inspired melodies with restful nature sounds like waterfalls and chirping birds. Donald Quan's compositions are largely keyboard-based, but they do feature some other Asian touches, such as the violin on "The Essence of Being" and the flutes on "Quiet Contemplation." "Euphoric Balance" and "Beauty in Nothingness" are two of the other standout tracks. Although the somewhat canned sound of the keyboards can be a little on the cheesy side, overall Asian Spa does a good job of blending its influences with contemporary sounds. ~ Heather Phares

Though producer/writer/arranger William Orbit had already amassed an impressive body of work under a litany of monikers, PIECES IN A MODERN STYLE was the first album to be released under his full name. Though Orbit is known as a trendsetter and pioneer of the ambient-house genre, he decided to go a different route for this solo debut, an album of classical songs, all of which are given an ambient lilt. The 11 classic compositions include works by Handel ("Xerxes"), Vivaldi ("L'Inverno"), and Beethoven ("Opus 132").
