| | Peter White Good Day CD (2009)
Blue Note Years, Vol. 2 CD music
$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many other guitarists who have contributed to smooth jazz (including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chuck Loeb, and Henry Johnson). Musically, a lot has changed since the '60s, but the more things change in music, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and 2009 found White (like Montgomery 41, 42, and 43 years earlier) still struggling with a desire to improvise and a desire for mass acceptance (the thing that jazz, for the most part, lost after World War II). Of course, one doesn't necessarily rule out the another; the late saxophonist ...

| | Rex Rideout Club 1600 CD (2000)
Blue Note Years, Vol. 2 music CDs
$11.05 Although this album is credited to various artists, the real auteur behind it is producer Rex Rideout, whose concept for it was similar to that of the all-star albums assembled by Quincy Jones, such as Q's Jook Joint. In fact, in the publicity notes for the album, Rideout calls it "Q's Jook Joint with more of an R&B flava on the light jazz textures." The difference, in other words, is that Rideout has produced an album aimed directly at smooth jazz and quiet storm radio formats consisting of melodic tracks with percolating electronic rhythm beds and modest soloing that is more tasteful than tasty, plus, in many cases, simple vocal lines expressing romantic sentiments. Rideout doesn't have Quincy Jones' ability to summon superstars into the studio, but the talents of Roy Ayers, Randy Brecker, and Will Downing are on display, along with those of many less well-known musicians. Club 1600 is deliberately nothing to get upset about, but it will make unobjectionable listening for many a lazy Sunday afternoon and might even make a nice soundtrack for a romantic evening. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Bill Banfield Jazzchamberworks CD (2000)
Blue Note Years, Vol. 2 album
$12.69 In the BMagic Orchestra, composer/conductor Bill Banfield has assembled a fine jazz orchestra from the pool of talent around Minneapolis' Twin Cities area. This is a well-recorded live date, and the exuberance of the band comes through. Banfield shows himself to be not only a very good arranger, but a fine composer as well. The program begins with three originals from Banfield: straight blues in "Bill's Blue," the lovely ballad "Her Embrace," and the up-tempo "And What Would You Like to Hear, Little Lady?" All are solid compositions with plenty of room for soloing. From there, the band moves into "standards" territory, with tunes from Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Ellington, Jobim, and Rogers and Hart's "My Funny Valentine." Along with the fine soloing, it's Banfield's arrangements that catch the ear. With most of ...
