Touching Silk album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter of Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. ~ James Christopher Monger

| | Enya Watermark CD (1988)
Touching Silk CD music
$14.69 One of Enya's most popular releases, WATERMARK is an enchantingly dreamy album, featuring washes of keyboards and ethereal vocals. On the title track, the gentle piano melody mimics the sound of falling water, and Enya's multi-tracked voice cascades over the music like a calm wind on a rainy night.
The most memorable composition on this 1988 record is the hit "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)." Marked by its keyboard-generated staccato strings and infectious vocal hook, this piece is probably the singer's best-known (and best-loved) song. "Cursum Perficio" features a gloomy vocal reminiscent of Carl Orff's CARMINA BURANA, ...

| | Secret Garden Dawn Of A New Century CD (1999)
Touching Silk album
$10.75 The Celtic sound has become such a franchise among purveyors of spiritual music that even Norwegians are doing it--and quite well at that. Composer Rolf Lovland and his partner, Irish violinist Fionuala Sherry, employ whistles and pipes, orchestral backing, and pianos in lush arrangements. The duo strays from the strictly instrumental approach of their previous two albums by including vocals by a series of ethereal singers. The reverential lyrics, upbeat musical themes, and overall opulence of the recording recall the best elements of Enya.
Additional Personnel includes: Karen Matheson (vocals); Terje Rypdal (classical guitar); Anuna (background vocals).
Recorded at Cross Studio, Kristiansand, Norway; Puk Studio, Randers, Denmark; Windmill Lane Studio, Dublin, Ireland.
Engineers: Alf Emil Eik, Oskar Pall Sveinson, Andrew Bolland.
Personnel: Nikki Matheson (vocals, ...
| | Loreena McKennitt Book Of Secrets CD (1997)
Touching Silk CD music
$15.65 Loreena McKennitt began her career as a New Age pop chanteuse, steeped in Celtic folk mysticism and possessed of an airy, ethereal voice. Over the course of her career she has dabbled to varying extremes in the pop format, but she remains true to the spirit of the traditional balladeer on THE BOOK OF SECRETS. With the aid of top-flight musicians like Danny Thompson and David Rhodes, she weaves a web of fanciful, wispy folk-rock that's not afraid to be beautiful as it pulls listeners in with it's comforting hypnotic qualities.
Personnel: Loreena McKennitt (vocals, harp, kanoun, accordion, piano, keyboards); Brian Hughes (vocals, acoustic, electric & classical guitars, bouzouki, oud, guitar synthesizer); Donald Quan (vocals, viola, keyboards, tabla, timba, esraj); Stuart Bruce (vocals); Aidan Brennan (acoustic guitar, mandola); Martin Jenkins (mandocello); David Rhodes (electric guitar); ...

| | Peter Cusak Baikal Ice CD (2005)
Touching Silk CD music
$14.75 File this one alongside Cusack's Where Is the Green Parrot? and My Favorite London Sounds. Recorded on location during the spring of 2003, at the crucial time when the ice over Lake Baikal fragments into thousands of icicles, Baikal Ice is an audio diary of untampered field recordings. The region is of course breathtakingly beautiful -- something Cusack's overwater recordings actually convey. You can hear the vast spaces, the majesty of the frozen lake, and the pittoresque of the location through the wind, bird, and human sounds, but also through the acoustical features of the recordings. We can hear unusual bird songs, children playing with an outdoor PA system, Cusack in his daily routine (mediated by his very dry sense of ...
