Released almost two years after Dillinger Escape Plan's previous recording, IRONY IS A DEAD SCENE (featuring guest singer Mike Patton of Faith No More/Mr. Bungle fame), MISS MACHINE finds the band sporting a new vocalist, but still offers the same incredibly complex mix of heavy metal, hardcore, avant-garde jazz, and progressive rock. Sounding at once more abrasive and more accessible, the New Jersey quintet takes the art-rock innovations of Shudder to Think and adds the extreme intensity of death metal. The band also throws in the experimental edge of Mr. Bungle and the dynamic chops of DISCIPLINE-era King Crimson to create something entirely its own. Less a collection of songs and more a multi-faceted tour through the outer boundaries of rock music, MISS MACHINE will challenge even the most regimented pop fan to lay aside preconceptions and take the journey.

Miss Machine
$6.59 Boston-based emo-pop outfit Tugboat Annie's much-streamlined third full-length album The Space Around You is an obvious bid for mainstream success; the band has toned down all of their excesses and created a fine, concise pop album. It isn't an overstatement to say that the first four tracks on the disc are nearly perfect; the soft verse/loud chorus dynamic of the romantic pop of "Stop" segues into the insanely catchy punk pop of "The Wishing Song" (in which the band sounds like a literate Blink 182 -- and that's in a good way) before the dreamy "Tell Me" lends way to the punchy "Love." After such a perfect start, it's too bad that the rest of the album doesn't seem as instant, but it's far from bad. Most of the arrangements are spacious and dreamy, and the thick production matches the introspective lyrics throughout. It's sensitive-guy alt-rock, and it means that fans of lighter, poppier emo (Promise Ring, Jimmy Eat World) and up-tempo power pop (Fountains of Wayne) will be equally pleased. With "The Space Around You," Tugboat Annie secures their place as one of the many points of light of Boston's increasingly strong rock scene -- and they make the ...

If you ever observed (or were) a pale depressed-looking teenager dressed entirely in black, sitting in the corner scribbling frantically into a marble bound notebook, then you already understand the Cure. In the 1980s, the Cure provided the soundtrack for an entire generation of misfit toys, and if SEVENTEEN SECONDS was a wake-up call for the dispossessed, FAITH is the daily affirmation. Scaled back down to a three-piece with the loss of keyboardist Hartley, the Cure is a lean, mean fighting machine, ready to rumble.
"Rumble" is the best way to describe the propulsive bass playing of Simon Gallup, whose rolling bass anchors both mid-tempo numbers like "The Drowning Man" and faster ...
