Like the other volumes in the Invisible Architecture series, this one by Microstoria is short (under 40 minutes) and has been assembled from the duo's live performance at the event in Brussels, summer 2000. Unlike Microstoria's previous releases, though, it presents music that is of a much more ambient nature. If you envision the association of Markus Popp and Jan St. Werner as a tug of war between their respective projects (Oval and Mouse on Mars), then for this album Popp won. His glitchy (de)constructions and sedated atmospheres dominate the music. That is not to say St. Werner goes unnoticed. His odd samples (toy guitar in "Soso Sound"?) and flawed reconstructed melodies give the tunes their soul. Each track sounds like it has been cut, pasted, recut, digitally stretched, tied in a knot, and replaced. Samples and cycles are jerky and rough-edged, yet the music holds on to its soothing feel. Is the title of the last track, "Endless Summer NAMM," winking at Fennesz's album Endless Summer? It should, because his influence would be hard to deny. Invisible Architecture No. 3 is a smooth ride on a gravel road. ~ François Couture
Personnel: Markus Popp, Jan St. Werner (electronics).
Recording information: Kaaitheaterstudio, Brussels, Belgium (2000).
The Wire (4/03, p.57) - "...It's not only a nice overview of Microstoria's utterly original and appealing soundworld, but also an object lesson in the virtues and processes of digital improvisation..." | | Portishead Dummy CD (1994)
Invisible Architecture 3 music CDs
$11.49 Named for a town near Bristol, England, Portishead is a British dance band that grabs ideas from all over the mod pop world (spaghetti Western guitars, turntable scratching, melancholy soul vocals, atmospheric organs, house beats) and stirs them into spacey, dub-like productions that sound like a dance club in the middle of a "Twin Peaks" dream. You could call it surreal hip-hop pop. But if the beats on the band's debut album achieve a kind of trance-like static, the songs themselves reach for something more rousing. With understated lyrics and overstated melodies, singer Beth Gibbons and bandleader Geoff Barrow write insinuatingly melancholy dance ballads that ebb and ...
| | Portishead CD (1997)
Invisible Architecture 3 songs
$10.45 Like Soul II Soul a few years before them, Portishead spearheaded a revolution in both pop and dance music by introducing a distinctive new groove. Portishead was at the vanguard of the '90s trip-hop onslaught, and after a three-year respite, they return with a self-titled second album to reclaim the trip-hop crown. Beth Gibbons is on her way to becoming the Billie Holiday of electronica, retaining a stoic, laconic tone while recounting tales of despair and emotional upheaval.
The lazy, spacious ...
| | Kraftwerk Minimum - Maximum CDs (2005)
Invisible Architecture 3 album
$15.95 Kraftwerk's vision of a keyboard-driven world of clicking metronomic rhythms and digitized sound bites may have been the stuff of avant fantasy in the 1970s (the decade that saw the band's first groundbreaking albums), but it is commonplace reality in the 2000s. This is true not only in popular contemporary music (nearly all branches of hip hop and electronica bear Kraftwerk's influence), but in the computer-dominated society in which we live. In this way, ...

$11.49 Phil Rosenthal is a highly regarded singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist in the world of bluegrass and folk music. He was lead singer and guitarist in the popular band the Seldom Scene, and was appointed Connecticut State Troubadour in 1994. His original songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe and others. After leaving the Seldom Scene in 1986, Phil formed his own label, American Melody, and has produced over 25 recordings for children and adults, featuring himself, the Sommers Rosenthal Family (Phil, wife Beth, and children Naomi and Daniel), Jonathan Edwards, the Smith Sisters, Cathy Fink, David Mallett and others. | | Steve Bug Bugnology, Vol. 2 CD (2006)
Invisible Architecture 3 CD music
$14.15 Steve Bug's second mix disc in what now appears to be a series, Bugnology, Vol. 2 is in ways a classic artifact of its time down to the cover art, where Bug is mixing not at decks but on a Macintosh laptop (with the friendly help of a bug at that). The mélange of songs and styles worked with is in a generally microhouse vein, even if the term itself has long since lost specific connections with its origins -- having figures like John Tejada on here instead suggests a larger continuum, though the crisp, compressed ...
