| | Essential Winter's Solstice CDs (2005)
8 Eyes (1996-1999)
$14.85 Windham Hill's successful A Winter's Solstice series started during the label's first year in 1985, and has continued at roughly a new volume every two or three years, each installment containing a bright wintry blend of classical music, reimagined hymns, chiming carols, and atmospheric compositions that have since garnered the name new age. This two-disc set picks some of the best and brightest moments from the series' first eight volumes, including David Qualey's guitar arrangement of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," Liz Story's piano rendition of "Greensleeves," harpist Lisa Lynne's "Northern Lights," and guitarist W.G. Snuffy Walden's sad, haunting "Moon Lake" on disc one. Disc two offers up the Modern Mandolin Quartet's take on "Trepak," drawn from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker Suite," William Coulter's lovely "Rain into Snow," and Darol Anger's reshaping of the traditional "I Saw Three Ships." The music on these two discs is beautiful, soothing, even redemptive, and it all seems as natural ...
| | Pat Thomas So Flows The Current CD (2001)
8 Eyes (1996-1999)
$12.89 So Flows the Current is one of Patrick O'Hearn's most consistent CDs. The consistency is in the quality. O'Hearn is not one to be tied to one style. This highly recommended CD comes on the heels of some of his work with Steve Roach, whose influence shows in the music's attitudes: This is bolder and has more bravado than ...
| | Robert Miles Dreamland CD (1996)
8 Eyes (1996-1999)
$7.59 Miles weaves beautiful textures with synthesizers, creating layers of sound (piano, strings, ethereal atmospherics, the occasional diva vocal) around a throbbing beat. DREAMLAND is a womb of sonic imagery that transports the listener as it soothes, resulting in an aural experience unlike any other.
Italian pianist turned DJ Robert Miles scored a massive international hit with his wonderful, dreamy dance cut "Children" (one of the 1990s biggest and best dance hits) from his debut album Dreamland. The album at times sounds as if it were one continuous song (or set of beats with similar chord progressions) stretched over an hour, which may detract some, but, in essence, is what makes his sonic dreamscape so engaging. It's at once both dancefloor and chill out material; one of those discs where one can hit the play button, drift into ...

| | DJ Cheb I Sabbah Maha Maya: Shri Durga Remixed CD (2000)
8 Eyes (1996-1999)
$13.59 MAHA MAYA features remixes of tracks from SHRI DURGA by DJ Cheb I Sabbah, State of Bengal, Transglobal Underground, Fun Da Mental, TJ Rehmi, Bedouin Ascent and others.
The Algerian-born DJ Cheb i Sabbah released Shri Durga in 1999, setting something of a new standard in South Asian dance music. Where Asian Underground upstarts and worldbeat fusioneers tend to throw equal parts bhangra, drum'n'bass, rock, reggae, and funk into the mix, Cheb i Sabbah took recordings of classical Indian performers and gave them restrained (but sometimes tastefully funky) modern treatments. Maha Maya, on the other hand, throws such caution to the wind, and with very pleasing results. It's ...
| | Mr Cheeks Back Again! CD (2003)
8 Eyes (1996-1999)
$22.09 Though his refusal to dumb down his raps or resort to sensationalism has prevented Mr. Cheeks from becoming quite as big a star as he perhaps should be, BACK AGAIN! reveals a mature and wiser artist who isn't afraid to search for deeper meaning in the hip-hop philosophy. "Reminisce" is a virtual pop-culture history lesson that points to the increasingly fleeting nature of popularity, given by a man who knows whereof he speaks.
Though he essentially belongs to an earlier era (as appearances by Pete Rock and CL Smooth suggest), Mr. Cheeks shows that his skills have only improved with age, and proceeds to spit out one lyrically complex and thoughtful rhyme after another. He also has an old-school veteran's knack for picking choice, no-nonsense samples and using them to create a mood that perfectly fits his rhymes. With BACK AGAIN! Mr. Cheeks reveals himself to be one of the few hip-hop artists who can maintain the sharp edge of gangsta rap while almost completely eschewing the violent aesthetic. Ultimately, this talent gives his work a much more "real" worldview than that propagated by his more famous contemporaries.
Recorded at Sony Studios, Sound On Sound, and The Hit Factory, New York, New York; Circle House Studios and South Beach Studios, ...

| | Pantha Du Prince This Bliss CD (2007) (Import) Germany
8 Eyes (1996-1999)
$16.09 Hendrik Weber's deep house compositions, while remaining at heart minimalist, contain an elegant lushness, culling influence from worlds numbering industrial, indie rock, new romantic, new age among many others. THIS BLISS, his second go-around as Pantha Du Prince, finds the artist dabbling in longer, more fluid themes, crafting melodies that even veer into a pop crevice somewhere between Kraftwerk and Orbital. There's a hypnotic passion underlying the German's creations propelling tracks like the pulsating "Asha" and the complex rave-inducing "Walden 2."
2007 release from DJ, producer, composer and furniture maker Hendrik Weber's (aka Pantha Du Prince), his second full-length release on Dial. Weber has always explored new worlds of sound under pseudonyms ...
