Caribbean music has always been interwoven with soul music. St. Thomas native Kevin Lyttle was raised with a love for both of these worlds separately, but he brings them together in a wholly unique way on his self-titled debut. Upon the album's 2004 release, the young singer--who possesses a malleable, organic, incredibly seductive tenor somewhere between Sean Paul and Roger Troutman--was already ruling the pop and R&B charts with the infectious dance jam "Turn Me On," a natural for summer radio with its chants, breakdowns, and relentless pulse.
Much of the remaining record captures the spirit of that hit, particularly the energetic "Last Drop" and "I Got It," both of which feature the growl of Spragga Benz. However, Lyttle proves he's truly at his best when he slows the tempo down to a sensual crawl, particularly on his mesmerizing re-imagining of Terence Trent D'Arby's 1988 hit "Sign Your Name." Lyttle finds the perfect balance of dance and bewitchment on the sweaty room-shaker "Dance Like Making Love." On this album, Lyttle proves he knows how to start a party and slow it down to a libidinous roar, making for a promising first outing, indeed.

The subtitle on this anthology is correct: this is truly the definitive collection of the 5th Dimension's music, including all the hits and most of the album cuts that anyone could want. The 20-bit digital mastering provides a crisp, bright audio experience, and the joyous harmonies bring back the positive side of the late-'60s/early-'70s era in which the songs were recorded. The megahits are all here: Jimmy Webb's "Up, Up and Away," Laura Nyro's "Stoned Soul Picnic" and "Wedding Bell Blues," the Bacharach/David ...
| | Lou Reed Live In Concert CD (1984) (Import) Germany
Kevin Lyttle songs
$10.49 Robert Quine has said that the personal and musical differences that led to the end of his working relationship with Lou Reed had put a wall between them well before he finally gave Reed his notice. While Quine never failed to deliver on-stage, the tension became audible in their music, and Live in Italy captures the best band of Reed's solo career about a year past its peak, not long before it fell apart for the first time (Lou would reassemble the group for the world tour that followed New Sensations -- a job Quine said he took solely for the money). Consequently, this isn't the ideal document of this band -- but it also makes clear that even on a lesser night, Reed, Quine, Fernando Saunders, and Fred Maher were a force to be reckoned with. While Quine's performance isn't flattered by this album's mix, his edgy lines blend superbly with Reed's, and both are in fine fettle, while Saunders shines on bass and Maher's rock-solid drumming holds everything firmly in place. Reed is on fire on most of these songs, and while this plays for the most part like a "Best of Lou Reed" set, he pulls out sharp, impassioned performances on every cut, doing lean-and-mean justice to Velvet Underground classics like "White Light/White Heat" and "Sister Ray," and rescuing the unnerving "Kill Your Sons" from the oblivion of Sally Can't Dance. Are there bootlegs or live videos that capture this band on better nights? Yes. Does that change the fact this is Reed's strongest live album? Not a bit. ~ Mark Deming
It's widely agreed among Lou Reed connoisseurs that his 1984 release Live in Italy is one of the best live albums of his recording career. But since it was never issued domestically (only available as an import), it has become increasingly harder and harder to find over the years. So in 1996, BMG got the rights to the recordings and reissued the album with a different cover (a ...
| | Sting All This Time CD (2001) Import
Kevin Lyttle album
$25.59 "All This Time" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
"Whenever I Say Your Name" won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. "Send Your Love" was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
ALL THIS TIME is the live album of Sting's performance in Italy on September 11, 2001.
This import features two cuts left off the American edition--"Mad About You" and "Piece Of My Heart."
On the day that the second live album of Sting's illustrious solo career (and third if you count the Police's 1995 LIVE set) was to be recorded in Tuscany, Italy, the widely respected singer/songwriter/bassist was beset with one of the world's worst horrors of all-time. The show was to be recorded and broadcast live on the web on September 11, 2001, the day of the World Trade Center tragedy. Instead of canceling it altogether, Sting went on with the recording (although the web broadcast was scrapped except for a single song), resulting in the release of the 15-song ALL THIS TIME, just two short months later. Featured are a trio of Police-era classics inventively re-arranged ("Roxanne," "Don't Stand So Close To Me," and "Every Breath You Take"), plus renditions of such solo selections as the expansive "(If You Love Somebody) Set Them Free," "Brand New Day," "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," and the poignant folk-like ballad "Fields of Gold."
SACRED LOVE seems like the culmination of a process that began 10 years earlier with Sting's TEN SUMMONER'S TALES album. While his first three solo albums were dense, cerebral affairs, that one began a move towards simplification and broader commercial appeal. While SACRED LOVE's predecessor was perhaps Sting's slickest, most pop-oriented album, this one seems to strike an easy balance between his weighty lyrical concerns and a broad-based, accessible sound.
As on his 1999 hit "Desert Rose," Sting uses world rhythms to spice things up here, employing sitar and Middle Eastern percussion on "The Book of My Life." An undercurrent of the R&B feel of BRAND NEW DAY can still be felt here as well, lending ballast to even his airiest harmonic moments. He even reprises the single "Send Your Love" (initially given worldbeat feel) as a percolating ...
| | Aaron Neville Orchid In The Storm CD (1986) Bonus Tracks
Kevin Lyttle CD music
$10.59 "The Ten Commandments Of Love" is a previously released Neville Brothers track.
Finally, here is a disc of Aaron Neville doing what he does best, singing the great music of the '50s. This is a 1983 EP consisting of five songs. This disc was done with some of the best musicians and writers available, with special attention to detail, from the opening notes of "Pledging My Love" to the final refrain of "Mickey Mouse March." You haven't heard it done like this before unless you saw the Neville Brothers years ago. There are no highlights, as all the songs seem to stand out; whether you want to single out Wardell Quezergue's stunning arrangement of Jerry Butler's "For Your Precious Love," or maybe the renowned Doc Pomus classic "Save the Last Dance for Me," each has that moment that takes you away. This is a labor of love by artists, musicians, and producers that showcases a man's remarkable abilities to take a listener to new places not of this realm. ~ Bob Gottlieb
Finally, here is a disc of Aaron Neville doing what he does best, singing the great music of the '50s. This is a 1983 EP consisting of five songs, expanded with four more songs. Though it is still short at 33 minutes and 35 seconds, it is not a wham-bam/on-and-off affair like it may seem, and there is not a throwaway cut here. This disc was done with some of the best musicians and writers available, with special attention to detail, from the opening notes of "Pledging My Love" to the ...
