Farewell Shows: Seattle, Wa
$12.19 Zony Mash is an experimental jazz band fronted by Hammond B-3/keyboardist Wayne Horvitz, the founder of Pig Pen, which has included John Zorn & Bill Frisell as members. Zony Mash was formed in 1995 and was the unofficial house band at Seattle's OK Hotel
Zony Mash: Timothy Young (guitar); Wayne Horvitz (Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Keith Lowe (bass); Andy Roth (drums). Recorded live at the Rainbow, Seattle, Washington in May & June 2001. Personnel: Wayne Horvitz (synthesizer); Tim Young (electric guitar); Keith Lowe (electric bass); Andy Roth (drums). Audio Mixers: Tucker Martine; Wayne Horvitz. Recording information: The Rainbow, Seattle, WA (05/2001-06/2001). What started as almost an accident has now turned into Wayne Horvitz's longest-lasting ensemble. With six albums together as a unit and a couple more backing other musicians, these players have a feel for each other that borders on telepathic. But as great as their albums are, anyone who has ever seen Zony Mash perform live knows that the band really thrives in a live setting, which is why Live in Seattle is such a valuable addition to the group's catalog. Recorded in May and June of 2001 on the band's home turf in Seattle, this is a great-sounding example of what Zony Mash can do with a little more room to stretch ...

| | John Coltrane Bye Bye Blackbird CD (1962)
Farewell Shows: Seattle, Wa
$9.59 Personnel: John Coltrane (soprano & tenor saxophones); McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones (drums). Recorded live in Europe in 1962. Originally released on Pablo (2308-227). Includes liner notes by Norman Granz and Dan Morgenstern. Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Personnel: John Coltrane (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); McCoy Tyner (piano); Elvin Jones (drums). Liner Note Author: George Howell. A straight reissue of the Pablo LP, this CD only contains 36 minutes of music but the quality is quite high. John Coltrane and his Quartet (pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones) perform extended versions of "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Traneing In" that gradually build up to great intensity. Well recorded, this European concert (of uncertain origin) is worth hearing, particularly by Coltrane collectors who already have his more essential recordings, although it does not quite live up to the label that producer Norman Granz gave it: "His Greatest Concert Performance." ~ Scott Yanow THE classic Coltrane Quartet--Tyner, Garrison, Jones--recorded live on a tour of Europe in the fall of 1962. One of the most influential jazz groups in history recorded live before ...

Personnel: Royal Crown Revue (background vocals); Mark Mahoney (rap vocals); James Achor (guitar); Mando Dorame (tenor saxophone); Bill Ungerman (baritone saxophone); Scott Steen (trumpet); Daniel Glass (drums, percussion). Recording information: Ground Control, North Hollywood, CA. Illustrator: Erik Olson. Photographer: Henry Diltz. With their debut album, Mugzy's Move, the Royal Crown Revue bring back the sound of pre-rock jump blues, playing a set of Louis Jordan-inspired originals and covers. Although the band is energetic and proficient, their cutesy originals and campy album art give their music an aura of being some sort of kitschy joke. Still, the band is talented enough to make those kinds of questions relatively easy to ignore. Mugzy's Move, despite its flaws, is an engaging set of nostalgic fun. [In 1998 Warner Bros. reissued Mugzy's Move with the addition of one bonus track: "Barflies on the Beach."]~ Thom Owens With their debut album Mugzy's Move, the Royal Crown Revue bring back the sound of pre-rock jump blues, playing a set of Louis Jordan-inspired originals and ocovers.
