5 stars Brian Wilson Tribute a masterpiece
What a surprise to hear this compilation of Brian Wilson "Beach Boys" tunes by such a wide range of jazz artists in a wide range of styles! I couldn't turn it off. The familiar melodies played and sang effortlessly, and the new jazz treatments didn't destroy them, but enhanced them and gave new feeling and insights. This CD will give lots of listening enjoyment to the "Beach Boys" enthusiast and the jazz afficionado alike.

If this new solo album by the legendary writer of "Light My Fire" is supposed to be the soundtrack to a movie, someone must have spilled the canister on the cutting room floor because this album is all over the place! From the dry, slow drums and repetitive licks of "Snake Oil" to the heavy and tribal pounds and gargly backing vocals of "Out of the Mood," this cuts from scene to scene and from idea to idea with little rhyme or rhythm. "Idolatry" is jazzy but in a sax-y way. Perhaps it is the soundtrack to the love scene of the mind Krieger appears wont to create. Similarly, the noir-y accelerations of "Missionary Jam" suggest a bungled chase scene. The beguilingly foreboding '80s guitar play of "Haunted Spouse" (which in itself sounds like a movie title) and the funky warning of "Red Alert" are both appropriately (or at least cleverly) entitled, but that may be the best that can be said of them. Taking ...

Michael Brecker is at the top of his game on TWO BLOCKS FROM THE EDGE. His assembled quintet is under continuous direction from their leader with sometimes no more than a subtle inflection from his powerful horn. Displaying his legendary freight train ('Trane?) chops and razor sharp tone is natural for Brecker, but it's his strength as a bandleader that shines through on this disc. Even with distinguished cohorts like Joey Calderazzo (piano), James Genus (bass), Jeff ...

Steve Tyrell recalls the classic American vocalists such as Nat "King" Cole and Frank Sinatra. Tyrell doesn't sound like either, but he does shares their eclectic, all-inclusive musical approach. Tyrell is also influenced by jazz and classic/old-school R&B, and he's contributed music to movies (FATHER OF THE BRIDE, MYSTIC PIZZA). In addition, he worked for Scepter Records at the time of the classic Burt Bacharach/Hal ...

Digitally remastered by Kirk Felton (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. When Monk finally got his cabaret card back in the summer of 1957, he began a six-month engagement on the lower east side of Manhattan. This stand heralded his return, thrilled the media and garnered him a modicum of respect and recognition. Recorded the following spring, THELONIOUS MONK WITH JOHN COLTRANE is an all-too fleeting recreation of the pianist's legendary Five Spot Quartet (plus a solo piano version of "Functional," and a powerful four-horn rendition of "Off Minor" from a June '57 session featuring Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins and Art Blakey). In many ways, Coltrane's stint with Monk marked his artistic breakthrough from a gifted technician, to a top musical innovator. Joining him in this remarkable quartet were Shadow Wilson, a drummer of rare musicality and restraint (listen to his sweeping brushwork on "Ruby, My Dear"), and Chicago bassist Wilbur Ware, whose lower register punctuations and sophisticated harmonic sensibility helped anchor the group. "Ruby, My Dear" is landmark for Coltrane the ballad player. Monk's repeated chordal figures function as a thematic entity, and Trane feels compelled to dig deeper into the melody, rather than simply ...
