| | Miles Davis In Person Friday And Saturday Nights At The Blackhawk, Complete CDs (2003) Remastered; Box Set
Live In London CD music
$31.29 "Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles to stroll for a taste.
Kelly's joy is infectious on the band's old warhorse "Bye Bye ...
| | Stan Getz Reflections CD (1964) Remastered; Digipak
Live In London music CDs
$9.89 Though in 1963 some purists considered Reflections to be certain evidence that Stan Getz had sold out and abandoned "real jazz" completely, the album is actually, while perhaps not a masterpiece, an artful and intriguing sidebar to the tenor saxophonist's now celebrated bossa nova period. Getz was always a sublimely smooth and lyrical player who had already recorded in an orchestral setting on the groundbreaking Focus, and had a number one pop hit with Jazz Samba. It was only natural, then, that he would want to combine the two concepts. Although Reflections does at times bear the slight stench of easy listening ...
| | Phil Woods This Is How I Feel About Quincy CD (2004)
Live In London songs
$13.49 On this CD, altoist Phil Woods pays tribute to arranger-composer Quincy Jones with whom he worked on several occasions in the 1950s and '60s. Woods' quintet, consisting of two other major soloists (trumpeter Brian Lynch and pianist Bill Charlap) plus the same bassist and drummer (Steve Gilmore and Bill Goodwin) that he has used since 1974, is augmented by four versatile musicians to form a "little big band." Woods, who is in top form, performs a dozen vintage Quincy Jones songs plus his own "Q's Delight." The leader wrote all but one of the arrangements, which are usually based on Jones' big band charts but adopted for the nonet. Few surprises occur but the music is pretty timeless. Jones obscurities alternate with such familiar pieces as "Stockholm Sweetnin'," "The Quintessence," "For ...

Recorded live on KAL radio in Berkeley, CA. on April 15, 1966, this presents roughly equal shares of material from Clifton Chenier, Mance Lipscomb, and Lightning Hopkins, performing at the 1966 Berkeley Blues Festival. The sound is not state-of-the-art, but decent ...
| | Jessica Williams Gratitude CD (1996) Reissued
Live In London music CDs
$15.75 An in-studio solo piano recital, Gratitude features Jessica Williams on a number of originals and jazz classics. Beginning with the minor-key, vamp-based original "The Sheikh," Williams acts as her own rhythm section, strumming the piano wires manually to set up the call-and-answer structure of the piece.
Compositionally, aside from Williams, John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk are the two prevailing forces on the record. Williams' version of Coltrane's "Mr. Syms" may be very straightforward, but tunes as good as these don't require any window dressing. "Like Sonny," ...
