| | Black Uhuru This Is Crucial Reggae CD Black Uhuru Discography of CDs
The series might be crucial reggae, but this collection from Black Uhuru doesn't qualify as essential. To be fair, there's the excellent "I Love King Selassie" from the band's early days in the Kingston ghetto, but there's a complete absence of anything they released on Island -- the material that made their name and also helped propel the rhythm team of Sly and Robbie into the spotlight. How you can claim a Black Uhuru collection is crucial without "Sinsemillia," "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?," "Spongi Reggae," or a strong selection from their Grammy album, Anthem, is a mystery. They've done some excellent work since, it has to be admitted, but even that pales in comparison to their real glory days in the late '70s and early '80s, when they offered a very fresh perspective on roots reggae. There are much better collections available, such as Liberation or 20th Century Masters. But take this for what it really is, some of the better work of the band's later days, and it's not bad. ~ Chris Nickson

This Is Crucial Reggae album
$9.29 The funk-jazz guitarist's new two album deal with Warner Bros. is definite cause for the title of his label debut, Celebration. His continued growth as a writer is clear, as the hooks of all nine originals stick immediately to the ears yet offer spaces for improvisations that sometimes border on his bebop days. "Together At Last" brings both worlds together, with Brown building a strong melody by altering his Ibanez's high and low tones over a subtle, rising bed of horns before breaking for a crazy flurry of notes which jump beyond the melody. His cherished vocalese style marries perfectly with trademark warm, percolating string notes on "Out'a Nowhere," which also throws a tonal twist into the mix; he'll begin a melody line on a happy high register and then conclude it on a tone so low it sounds like a bass. One of the benefits of his crossover success is working with two of the best possible producers in smooth jazz and R&B-Paul Brown and Oji Pierce (Coolio, ...
| | Black Uhuru Red CD (1981) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
This Is Crucial Reggae CD music
$7.09 Arguably Black Uhuru's finest offering, RED was the band's sophomore effort on Island's Mango subsidiary, and crystallized their unique combination of contemporary sounds (including synthesizers and electronic drums), traditional roots reggae, and male/female trio vocals (with lead singer Michael Rose backed by Sandra "Puma" Jones, and Derrick "Duckie" Simpson). For a sound centered primarily on rhythm grooves, Black Uhuru's music is remarkably complex, and manages to sound both stripped down and fully fleshed out (there is a battery of interlocking ...

| | Hiram Bullock Way Kool CD (1992)
This Is Crucial Reggae album
$10.65 On the follow-up to his Atlantic debut, guitarist and producer Hiram Bullock pulled out all the stops and dove wholeheartedly onto the "funk" side of jazz-funk and left out the jazz. No, that's not a bad thing. If anything, Way Kool feels a lot more like a funky rock record than anything else. With a handpicked cast of studio greats, Bullock set out ...
