Blue Spirits album
$14.44 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or Aimee Mann in ballad mode, but its arrangements never call attention to themselves, the way that some Jon O'Brien productions do. Instead, the focus is always on Jones' voice and songs, which are once again all originals, sometimes ...

| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
Blue Spirits music CDs
$12.95 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. However, Connick isn't only concerned with reworking tunes in unexpected ways; on the contrary, longtime fans of Connick's swinging neo-crooner vocals will be pleasantly surprised by his straightforward takes on "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Some Enchanted Evening." Similarly engaging are his renditions of such rock-oriented tunes as Elton John's "Your Song," his low-key version of Don McLean's "And I Love ...

| | Evan Parker House Full Of Floors CD (2009)
Blue Spirits album
$12.78 On an inside panel of the booklet for House Full of Floors, Evan Parker's second release for John Zorn's Tzadik imprint (and his third album of 2009), he writes simply of the session as if framing a poem: "The plan was to / record the trio. / Aleks Kolkowski / came to make some / wax cylinder recordings / and he stayed / to play some / quartet pieces." The truth of the matter is, this is hardly disingenuous. The recording actually sounds exactly like its description. Parker, guitarist John Russell, and bassist John Edwards are featured on the majority of this beautiful set in a series of trios and duets that are knotty, subtle, and deeply intuitive improvisational pieces. Kolkowski joins them on a Stroh viola, the saw, and wax cylinder recorder on two tracks as well. Parker's signature as an improviser is immediate. Whether it's a series of single-note lines and phrases or tonal clusters rushing out of his tenor or soprano, the control is total. A prime example is "Ca-la-ba-son," an 11-minute trio piece where we first hear Russell's acoustic guitar before some breathy elongated tones on Parker's tenor. Edwards is hammering ever so lightly on the strings of his bass as an empathic rhythmic force. Parker's sense of "melody" quickly asserts itself and Russell is then coloring the spaces between. It's a very fast shift, but one that is so precise and intuitive that it could have been scripted. Of course, exchanges happen ...

| | Max Indian You Can Go Anywhere Do Anything CD (2009)
Blue Spirits album
$14.79 Like a pair of well-worn blue jeans, Max Indian's You Can Go Anywhere, Do Anything feels just right. Forgive frontman Carter Gaj if he sounds familiar, as the Chapel Hill singer-songwriter mines several decades of pop genius. From the delicious harmonies and hooks of The Beatles and Badfinger to a distorted take on The Byrds' chime and Big Star's jangle, all played with a bit of Elvis Costello's and Joe Jackson's new wave spirit, you'll recognize the cues from which Max Indian leaps. The earthy production of You Can Go Anywhere adds to its timeless nature. Vocals are dabbed in reverb, and there's very little mixed up front, lending a classic AM radio sound. Backward guitar opens "Together at Last," with studio chatter and a crowd of vocals adding a freewheeling vibe to a chorus plucked from hippie mantra. James Wallace's piano bounce gives "Whatever Goes Up" a carefree breeze perfect for a sidewalk shuffle. While handclaps and upbeat tempos make for songs that sound cheery, the record's not all sunshine and smiles lyrically. Gaj ruminates on mortality from the dreamy haze of the aptly titled "Big Picture" while almost giddily recounting post-breakup defeat in "Now I Know." Gaj remains eternally optimistic but hopelessly romantic, as the loping "Heaven Help Us" proves with soaring guitar and a "won't be a thing if you ain't got love" mission statement. You Can Go Anywhere finds itself in the same eclectic pop neighborhood as Wilco's Being There, whether it's next door with the dead-ringing organ and acoustic strum of album opener ...
| | Phil Manzanera 801 Live @ Hull CD (2001)
Blue Spirits CD music
$27.95 Fans of the original 801 Live album will know and love the songs found here. This was recorded during the famous 1977 tour and features a number of songs found on that classic recording. Of course, Eno is not here and the same excitement and tight playing are not found. However, this is still a very good album. Manzanera released this in 2000 as part of his Archive Series and intended it for fans or collectors. However, this album is a great example of late-'70s prog/art rock. Yes, the long-drawn-out guitar solos are here, but these are interesting, melodic solos; they fit the songs and actually add a great deal. The music is a great cross section of Manzanera's pre-1977 history. Roxy Music is represented here, with a blistering version of "Out of the Blue" featuring Eddie Jobson that is brilliant, with a great violin solo and wonderful arrangements. Also here is some of Manzanera's best solo material, including the brilliant "Diamond Head." Also worth note is the 801 take on "Tomorrow Never Knows" (known here as "TNK"), sounding eerie ...
