The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. I started writing songs in 1959. The first recordings I made were at Cuca Records in Sauk City, Wisconsin. At that time just about everyone that had a band or wrote songs recorded at Cuca. The last time I was in the studio was in 1970. When my mother passed away on February 2nd, 2007 I wrote a song as kind of a tribute to this great woman called "No Disappointments Up There." It's a bluegrass Gospel song and after I sang it a few times for family and friends they suggested that I record it along with several other songs I had written. Another song called Deer Hunting Season Again was recorded on the CD called Kindly Keep It Country. It's a song I wrote about 20 years back and is a humorous look at Deer Hunting in the State of Wisconsin. I contacted a recording studio that I had read about in the local scandal sheet called RY Productions in Willard, Wisconsin and talked with Richie Yurkovich and told him what I had in mind. He said he could get the musicians to back me if I wanted to make a record of some of the songs I wrote over the last 50 plus years. The musicians he got were exceptional. We went into the studio and Kindly Keep It Country is the result of four months of work in the studio. Chet Atkins told my father over 40 years ago that if you surrounded yourself with quality musicians you couldn't help but make yourself sound good. With this CD I guess I proved that. All of the songs on the CD I wrote, but without the quality musicians the songs would be just another tune. This CD will take you back in time to when the Nashville Sound was the country sound. The CD also features a little bit of the Roy Orbison sound with a Marty Robbins flavor.The last song on the CD is called It's Still Raining and makes one think about the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn. This CD started as simply me wanting to have a record of some of the songs I wrote in the past and ended up to be something beyond my wildest dreams. I hope you will purchase Kindly Keep It Country and play it as one of your favorite CD's. It's got something for everyone and unless you are a die hard acid, rap or top 40's fan ...
