Hits From 1960S album
$12.05 Playing off the singer's initials, Mas is a fine collection of hits from one of Mexico's most romantic exports, Marco Antonio Solis. Chart-topping numbers like "Ojala," "Más Que Tu Amigo," and "O Me Voy o Te Vas" are all here, but 2008's career redefining hit, "No Molestar," is missing, which might be a shock to buyers who don't carefully scan the track list first. Newcomers who want to go deeper into ...

| | Soundscape UK Uptown Groove CD (2000)
Hits From 1960S music CDs
$9.69 On their first two releases Soundscape UK combined elements of acid in with a radio-ready sound but with Uptown Groove their music is aimed strictly at the smooth jazz marketplace. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the duo is good at creating club etched background music but the result is more polished and professional then memorable. The instrumental tracks are respectable but have little individual personality but about a third of the album is reserved for upscale retro soul and these tracks work best, thanks in part to the vocalist Opal. ~ Nick Dedina
Recorded in London, England & New York, New York in 1999 and 2000.
Composer: Opal.
Personnel: Opal (vocals); Dave Priseman (trumpet, flugelhorn); Mick Talbot (Fender Rhodes piano, Wurlitzer organ, keyboards); Chris Bangs (drums, programming); Gota Yashiki (drums); Marvin ...
| | Mastica '99 CD (2000)
Hits From 1960S songs
$12.55 Mastica is a trio consisting of drummer Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mr. Mister, XTC), bassist/cellist/singer Gum B. (Poi Dog Pondering, Alejandro Escovedo), and a young reed player and singer named Monkey (Baboon Orchestra). The combined pedigrees of these musicians might lead you to expect something deeply weird, and you'd be right, but it's all weird in the best way: challenging and unpredictable, yet never willfully difficult. Mastelotto's drumming combines textural invention with meat-and-potatoes beats, while Monkey's various reed instruments alternately twine through the mix and create layers of atmosphere within each arrangement. Gum B.'s contributions aren't always easily distinguishable from the electronic sounds and manipulated samples that are stacked floor-to-ceiling on each track, but occasionally (as on the untitled hidden track at program's end) his gutbucket bass takes front and center, and at other times his cello will suddenly become clearly audible in the mix. Highlight tracks include the complex and lovely "Crescent Moon" as well as "Prison," which is built around samples from an old Alan Lomax field recording. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Got Hits 2: More Perfect Pop CD (2005)
Hits From 1960S album
$12.65 Although many music fans think of the Beatles or Beach Boys when the idea of "perfect pop" is mentioned, that term means something a bit more contemporary on 2005's GOT HITS 2: MORE PERFECT POP. On this tween-centric compilation, starlets Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan offer the rocked-out tunes "Come Clean" and "Ultimate," respectively. Former indie queen Liz Phair sneaks in among the kids with her anthemic "Extraordinary," while Skye Sweetnam offers up the cheeky "Tangled Up in Me." Although the disc features mostly female artists, performers ranging from Rascal Flatts (who weighs in with the twangy "These Days") to Lil Romeo (on ...
