The veteran R&B sideman and popular smooth jazz guitarist usually lets his listeners know the vibe based on his album titles, from the Grover Washington, Jr.-influenced blues-soul of Inner City Blues to his most popular, Laid Back. On his critically acclaimed Heads Up debut, 97th and Columbus, the native New Yorker -- who titled the disc after the location of the classic Manhattan club Mikell's, where he did some serious shedding in the '80s -- paid homage to his eclectic roots, fashioning a tribute to, among others, chief influences Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Chet Atkins, and Ramsey Lewis. Focusing on touches of hip-hop, old-school soul, and slick in-the-pocket grooves, Cool Like That blends elements of his past successes with a love for classic rock (via a modern twist on the Beatles' "Let It Be"), a taste of East Coast jazz fusion ("To the East"), and a spiritual and densely percussive, African-tinged journey with lyrics in the Kenyan language ("Hatujambo"). He always surrounds himself with the best on the L.A. studio scene -- this time, that roster includes saxmen Michael Lington and Ron Brown, keyboardist Kevin Toney, trumpeter Mark Ledford, bassist Reggie Hamilton, and percussionist Munyungo Jackson. Also appearing on the opening track, "Push," is longtime pal Kirk Whalum. ~ Jonathan Widran
Personnel: Doc Powell (guitar, classical guitar); Gary Taylor, T.C. Bereal (vocals); Ron Brown (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone); Kirk Whalum, Michael Lington (tenor saxophone); Kevin Toney (piano); Michael Bereal (Fender Rhodes piano, Wurlitzer piano); Reggie Hamilton (Moog synthesizer, acoustic bass guitar); Freddie Flewellen (bass guitar); Munyungo Jackson (percussion).

Cool Like That songs
$9.09 (MP3 Available for Download) Burgeoning smooth jazz superstar Steve Cole continues to bridge the gap between pop-jazz and classic R&B on his third studio album, NY LA. Featuring strong melodic statements and truly funky keyboards via the likes of Brian Culbertson and Marquis "Hami" Dair, NY LA is a moody and solid affair. From the disco-influenced "Off Broadway," which harkens back to the best work of the Crusaders, to the Donald Byrd-esque "Interlude IV," tenor saxophonist Cole deftly crosses the boundary from jazz soloist to R&B heavyweight. More Grover Washington, Jr. than Kenny G., Cole manages to keep things organic and simple -- despite ...
| | Jeff Lorber Philly Style CD (2003)
Cool Like That album
$13.39 (MP3 Available for Download) The soul-jazz minded keyboardist has been a legendary pop-fusion and smooth-jazz artist for several decades, and producer Steven Dubin had been a huge smooth-jazz force for several years (working with Peter White, Richard Elliot and Najee). The two Philadelphia natives never crossed paths (despite having gone to the same high school and played the same clubs), however, until Lorber hired him to work on his album Kickin' It. This disc continues the fun, feisty and funky retro-soul vibe of that disc in an even fuller celebration of their Phillyness. Lorber is so well known for his old school Rhodes textures (which were "new school" when he first did them in the 70s) that it's nice to hear so much classy acoustic piano here, as on the seductive, horn drenched opening track "Under Wraps." Lorber uses the Rhodes as an underpinning harmony, but his ivory ...

| | Steve Oliver 3-D CD (2004)
Cool Like That MP3 Album
$14.65 (MP3 Available for Download) As one reviewer said of the cheerful music and personality of this increasingly popular voice of smooth jazz guitar, it's Disneyland all the time with him. In other words, Positive Energy, the name of his second genre disc, wasn't just a happy marketing tool. And the title of this disc is appropriate, too, because with the co-production help of founding Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman, Oliver digs deep into a rich variety of influences for a multifaceted romp through the worlds of pop, jazz, urban/hip-hop, worldbeat, Brazilian, and Latin music. While focusing as always on his classic acoustic guitar and brilliant "vocalese" to convey the lead melodies on the instrumentals, he stretches into edgier blues territory with his lesser-heard electric on "In the Shade of Cool." ...
| | Boney James Pure CD (2004)
Cool Like That music CDs
$9.59 (MP3 Available for Download) Nine albums into his career, Boney James makes a grab for the smooth-jazz crown with PURE, an outing that finds him working with a mix of soul and jazz luminaries. James ups the stakes by taking over the production reins (in addition to co-writing every song). Still front and center with his beloved tenor saxophone, this Grammy-nominated artist shifts to soprano sax for the harmony-soaked Bilal duet "Better with Time" and the silk sheets-and-champagne slow jam "Break of Dawn," featuring up-and-coming Detroit crooner Dwele.
Debi Nova adds her lovely vocals to the beat-driven "Appreciate," a cut that wouldn't sound out of place on a Toni Braxton or Brandy album. Instrumentals are still the focus, however, ...
| | Jeff Kashiwa Peace Of Mind CD (2004)
Cool Like That songs
$12.39 Jeff Kashiwa has a fluent if generic style on soprano, alto, and tenor, which fits perfectly into the "feel good" smooth music that he performs on "Peace of Mind." The 11 selections clock in between 3:46 and 5:14 and were clearly recorded with hopes of getting maximum radio airplay. Kashiwa's rhythm section is effective if anonymous (despite the presence of Brian Bromberg on bass) with the focus being almost entirely on the leader's melodic playing. While the music is lightly grooving and mildly soulful and Kashiwa plays well, no surprises occur ...
