Brooklyn-based experimental-rock outfit the Book of Knots layer progressive tendencies, noise, and heavy, head-banging rock on their self-titled debut. Released originally in 2004, then re-released in 2007, THE BOOK OF KNOTS is a concept album of sorts dealing with nautical themes and seafaring narratives, but the music is pure deconstructive indie rock. Strains of Slint and Sonic Youth can be heard throughout, but the Book of Knots' warped, arty aesthetic has its own special twist. The music isn't likely to appeal to your average mainstream rock fan, but those thirsty for alternative sounds will find much to appreciate. Several years ago two Boston-based rock musicians (and moms), Chris Toppin (Fuzzy) and Tanya Donelly (Belly, Throwing Muses, Breeders), decided they wanted to start a project that would bring together their tremendous music community in order to create the kind of kids' cd that didn't seem to exist, with a few rare exceptions (Dan Zanes, Ralph's World etc. - pre "kindie rock" scene). When Chris and Tanya asked some of their friends to each write and record a song, the immediate response from each of the artists was of great enthusiasm. Chris and Tanya felt that they were going to end up with something quite special but what they ended up with far exceeded their expectations. Each song seemed to have its own particular style and sparkle, and when all 16 submissions were put together to form one body of work, it became truly magical! David Minehan's 'Shelter Soulmate', a touching pop/rock gem of a song that depicts Minnie the kittie's point of view of how wonderful it is to be found by your "soulmate" family at the animal shelter; Tanya Donelly's 'Laluna the Loon' about a little girl who tries to convince her parents that her midnight trips to the moon are not just a product of her fantastic imagination; Bill Janovitz's crazy mixed up farm; Chris Toppin's rocking love song to a ball. These are just a small sampling of the incredibly well crafted songs on this cd that offer kids the kind of sophistication in music that they deserve -- with imaginative topics that interest them, melodies that delight and grab them, and rhythms that get them up on their feet. And because parents will love the music just as much, this cd will definitely be in regular rotation for a long time to come.

$14.25 On TRAINEATER, the Book of Knots' sophomore effort and Anti-Records debut, the Brooklyn avant supergroup crafts a soundscape conceptually based on the decaying of the Rust Belt. | | Phineas & Ferb Phineas and Ferb: Songs From the Hit Disney Tv Series CD (2009) Digipak
Book Of Knots songs
$10.09 For anyone hasn't watched episodes of the Disney animated series PHINEAS AND FERB, it's highly recommended. It is a Saturday morning cartoon comedy that stars two irrepressibly inventive, multi-talented mischievous nerd geniuses (who happen to be stepbrothers), their vain, hyperactive, scheming sister Candace, and their pet platypus that happens to be a secret agent fighting an evil scientist. The plots are standard, and sometimes so are the jokes, but the characters aren't. One of the show's highpoints is the music, from Bowling For Soup's theme song "Today Is Gonna Be a Great Day" (who can argue with a power pop punk song with a killer hook that states, "This could possibly be the best day ever and tomorrow could be a million and six times better..."?) There's also the dubby dancehall ...
| | Christmas With The Chipmunks, Vol. 1 CD (1962)
Book Of Knots album
$5.09 If you ignore, with the benefit of "grown-up" hindsight, the fact that the voices of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore were somewhat shrill, occasionally tuneless, and arguably annoying to obnoxious levels, the first volume of Christmas With the Chipmunks is a classic holiday record, and it certainly is that. The minor failings of those three cartoon voices are easy to ignore, and ultimately dismiss, especially if you were a child or were raising one in the 1960s and 1970s. For kids the world already pulsates with a sort of cartoonish, surreal ...

| | Diamond Joe- A Treasure Chest Of Rarities And Collectables From The Sound Of Meeks-Ville CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Book Of Knots album
$17.75 By the time this 21-track compilation appeared in 2007, there had been so many anthologies of Joe Meek productions that even those oddballs determined to collect as many as they could were understandably losing track of what had or hadn't been issued where. This particular disc focuses on "rarities and collectables," and couldn't be considered among the more essential Meek comps out there. If you are someone who's interested enough in the eccentric British producer to accumulate a half dozen or more CDs of work, however, this is a worthwhile add to the shelf. None of these songs were hits, and few of the artists even had anything resembling hits, though Carter-Lewis & the Southerners and Glenda Collins made a little noise. But all of the material has Meek's characteristic weird way with sonic ambience, combining quasi-outer space echo, instrumentation, and compression with lightweight but undeniably catchy early-'60s British pop. As a perhaps more useful note to the collectors likely to search this out, it also has a bunch of hard to find sides, with five previously unreleased cuts and -- according to the liner notes -- 11 that were unavailable elsewhere on CD when this anthology was issued, though Meek-o-philes may have heard at least some of this on out of print comps. Some of the songs here are quite good, particularly the two singles by Carter-Lewis & the Southerners, which have near Merseybeat-like catchiness and vocal harmonies; Glenda Collins' "It's Hard to Believe It" (presented in a previously unavailable stereo version), which has some of the most explosive effects and astral instrumentation of any of Meek's non-hits; Joy & Dave's enjoyable country & western-like harmonized outing, "Diamond Joe"; and Johnny Garfield's blustery orchestrated pop number, "Fickle Heart." Some of the other tracks, of course, don't have too much going for them other than imaginative production, and the two instrumental tracks by the Saints sound a little like studied attempts to replicate the sound of the Tornados. It's good frivolous fun for the most part, however, with the sort of detailed liner notes that are becoming expected for Meek CD compilations, no matter how obscure the source material. ~ Richie Unterberger
