It's funny how every time another phenomenally funky, brass-fired groove party comes out in the shape of another solid Incognito date, the label touts it as "retro." This time, Narada Jazz's press materials focus on all of group mastermind Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick's influences in order to remind listeners that he's a child of the '70s. But the basic soul vibe of that decade has been the defining element of Incognito's sound since their first disc in the early '80s. The big story on 2003's Who Needs Love was the inclusion of a Brazilian vibe via Ed Motta, and here it's the return after several albums of the honey soul-voiced Maysa Leak, who was a big part of the group's rise to acid jazz prominence in the early '90s. Depending on the intensity of the groove, Leak's cool vibes add breeze or urgency over the course of her seven tracks -- from the laid-back seduction of "Don't Turn My Love Away" to the more danceable and emotionally charged "Everything Your Heart Desires" and the moody, socially conscious "This Thing Called Love." Listening to the irrepressible instrumentals, which keep the groove moving under increasingly snazzy horn fire, it's clear the kind of impact Incognito has had on newer Brit outfits like Down to the Bone. "The 25th Chapter" rolls on and on like a disco on fire (with jazzy flute pepper trying to put it out), while no less than George Duke (another '70s-minded jazz-funk genius) spices up the spacy soul jam "Mindin' My Business" with some out-there Rhodes improvisations. Even with some 1,000 musicians passing through Incognito's ever-revolving doors and ever-evolving sound, Maunick's admiration for the soul music that first inspired him comes through brilliantly every time out. ~ Jonathan Widran

Incognito Adventures In Black Sunshine Songs Adventures In Black Sunshine Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Incognito triumphs! Here is another perfect reason to fall in love with Incognito all over again.....Firstly, Maysa is all over this recording and sounds more divine than ever. Secondly, the vibe throughout is unmistakably Bluey's. It took me about two whole listens to be captivated into replay mode! Highlights are the gorgeous "Don't turn my love away" and the second cut, "Everything your heart desires"...."Fences and Barriers"....and the brilliant and danceable re-make of "Listen to the music". If you are a fan, don't think twice........add this to your collection immediately!!! Submitted by fleo (Niagara Falls NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
5 STARS HONESTLY!!!!! I don't think there is a bigger Incognito fan alive than myself so I am advising you correctly. I have not been satisfied with the last 2 releases from Bluey Maunick but the key is I purchase everything this man writes and produces because I know he is one of the most talented musicians alive. When Incognito put out some of the best music ever in the mid 90's I realized that Bluey is wasw of the best period. It was a treat to get him to sign my Incognito CD's when I met him in person on my birthday in 90's and discuss music with him. Now to the CD! He returned to his formula of the 90's and he delivered what I consider his best release ever besides "Positivity" which is definately saying a lot. I felt I wasted some money on his last 2 releases but as I indicated Bluey is worth the money and I am so satified with this release! Love It! Well they've done it again. The standout songs: "Don't Turn My Love Away", "True To Myself", "Fences & Barriers" and "Mr Jones". Maysa is her usual (great) self here as her vocals are simply timeless. How this group manages to pull this off time and time again is amazing. I don't think they'll ever play out or "run their course" with such material. Other songs that I like here: "Close My Eyes", and "This Thing Called Love".
