| | Bernhard Fleischmann Welcome Tourist CD Bernhard Fleischmann Discography of CDs
According to the press materials, Bernhard Fleischmann "wants to criticize a state of mind that subordinates human beings to a logic of economic utilization." A noble sentiment, to be sure, but not the kind that necessarily leads to the production of enjoyable music -- let alone two full discs of enjoyable music. Luckily for those whose musical tastes have not yet succumbed to the dialectical imperative, Fleischmann's compositions are mainly instrumental, and for the most part they are not obtrusively political in content. The first disc is the most conventionally enjoyable of the two; its 11 tracks run the gamut from a glitchy electronica setting for a German translation of Thoreau ("02/00") to a slowly rocking and deeply harmonically weird composition for piano, guitar, and drums titled "Letter From Home" and, best of all, a little number called "Waiting for You to Come" that consists of little more than a mellow, laid-back piano overlaid with jittery, drill'n'bass drum programming. The second disc is a single, 45-minute-long track entitled "Take Your Time." This piece is almost cinematic in scope, starting out as a jumble of musique concrète, then passing through phases of country-tinged steel guitar, dubwise phase shifting, and a sort of glitch-jazz before finally turning into twisted a kind of song. Politics or no politics, this is radical music in the best sense of the term. ~ Rick Anderson Bernhard Fleischmann Welcome Tourist Songs | | Welcome Tourist CD DISC 1: |

Welcome Tourist
$15.05 When Jonas Bering followed up Bienfait a few months after release with the Emballages 12", it was apparent that the Frenchman was beginning to develop a thicker, fuller, more dance-oriented sound -- a sound that was also beginning to shed the inspirations that were previously perceptible to a fault. This progression continued up to the release of Sketches for the Next Season; another pair of Kompakt twelves -- including Normandie, one of the label's best of 2003 -- along with an excellent release for Logarythm (as En:no) and a contribution to Sentrall's Drive the Five series ("Down to Big Sur," a shuffle-tech track on par with the best Schaffelfieber entries) all paved the way. With the exception ...
| | Kaito Hundred Million Love Years CD (2006) (Import) Germany
Welcome Tourist
$16.55 After the charm of Kaito's first disc won over the hearts of trance music naysayers and won favor with the hard-hearted ambient purists via the beatless version of the album, Kompakt began a mild onslaught of releases exploring the melodic, epic side of techno that bordered on progressive house/trance. Many of these records infused the spirit and romanticism of early Detroit releases with the dramatic ...

| | Little Steven Greatest Hits CD (1999) Import; Remastered
Welcome Tourist
$10.49 The popular E Street guitarist's "GREATEST HITS" collection reissued and remastered. Swedish import.
Compiler and annotator Sven Peterson notes that "Little Steven" Van Zandt was more successful in Europe than in his native U.S., with two of his albums reaching the Top Ten in Sweden, so it is appropriate that this compilation of his EMI recordings was assembled in Sweden and released in Europe, but not the U.S. Peterson has chosen five tracks each from Little Steven's three EMI albums, plus the non-LP single "Vote!," and sequenced them chronologically. Thus, it is possible to trace both the artist's musical development and, most strikingly, his increasing militancy. The songs from 1982's Men Without Women recall Van Zandt's writing for Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and Gary U.S. Bonds; they are 1960s-style, R&B-tinged pop-rock informed by the wide-screen production sound Bruce Springsteen developed with Van Zandt's assistance, with lots of screaming lead guitar and horn charts. Starting with 1984's Voice of America, ...

| | Doctor Sparkles Monkey Swing Monkey Doo CD (2008)
Welcome Tourist
$12.65 The Cosmic Cabaret Wise Guy returns to make light of self in his 2nd album - conducting a swing band with his ukulele in the mythical, metaphorical and musical recreation of humanity’s tail. And so Monkey Swing Monkey Doo reflects upon our lively origins, our enlightened potential and our capacity to love & express ourselves through such artforms as flinging poo at the zoo.To this end Monkey Swing Monkey Doo is both thoughtfully composed and splattered with improvisation. Joining Doctor Sparkles are San Francisco’s Mad Duran (woodwinds), Chicago’s Anavi (vocals), New York’s Jim Dower (keyboards) and Norfolk’s Russell Scarborough (drums)… to name but a few of its creative contributors. (Full list below)*By the way, Monkey Swing Monkey Doo was nominated by Toronto Exclusive Magazine for Best International Jazz Album.PRESS REVIEWS:"What do you get when you cross a ukulele and monkey doo? How about one of the best swing albums of the year?... Cabaret Jazz is a serious art form, and must be undertaken with a light heart and a sense of humor. Doctor Sparkles appears to have found the right formula.... This is an exciting album that will play well to crowds of all ages." (Wildy - Wildy's World)"This is music that's contemporary but with the sound of history ingrained - that is to say it's living and breathing as opposed to mere pastiche.... It's firmly tongue-in-cheek, but at the same time the message is clear throughout all the songs: forget what's acceptable, conventional, and 'normal' - trust your feet, and get up and dance. Now that's the best (and perhaps most political) advice that I've had lately. Switch off the tv, and switch on to Doctor Sparkles - you won't regret it." (Clovis - Three Monkeys Online)"The tone is lively and bright but there’s a Rive Gauche dark side ...
