(7 Customer Reviews)
Although Mountain only had a few years of true artistic greatness, their impact on hard rock was impressive; April Wine, Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and Pat Travers were among the many hard rockers who were directly or indirectly influenced by Mountain's early-'70s recordings. Creatively, Mountain was never the same after the departure of Felix Pappalardi in 1972, and some rock historians have questioned whether or not lead singer/guitarist Leslie West and drummer Corky Laing should have continued to use the name Mountain in the '80s, '90s or 2000s -- that they should call themselves something like the "West/Laing Group" because without the late Pappalardi, they aren't really Mountain. Nonetheless, West and Laing still have their hardcore followers, who are the target audience of this 2004 release. Eruption, a double-CD live album, spotlights two post-Pappalardi versions of Mountain. The first unites West and Laing with bassist Mark Clarke (of Uriah Heap fame), and that lineup is heard on some New York club performances from 1985; the second lineup (West, Laing and bassist Richie Scarlet) is heard during a European tour of 2003. Of course, hearing Mountain in 1985 and 2003 isn't like hearing Pappalardi-era Mountain back in 1970 and 1971 -- the group is way past its prime, which isn't to say that Eruption is without merit. West and Laing are in decent form on old favorites like "Nantucket Sleighride" (which they perform in both 1985 and 2003), "Mississippi Queen" and "Never in My Life"." But here's the thing: Mountain was much more than decent back in their early-'70s heyday -- they were one of the most powerful and exciting hard rock bands around. Casual listeners should stick to Mountain's classic Pappalardi-era output; Eruption is strictly for the group's most diehard fans. ~ Alex Henderson
Mountain: Leslie West (vocals, guitar); Richie Scarlet, Mark Clarke (vocals, bass guitar); Corky Laing (vocals, drums).

Eruption Music Review Average Rating: (3.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Disappointing I am a huge fan of Mountain, and have been since about 1972. This disc is very disappointing -- the mix is awful, the vocals (when Leslie can remember the words) are awful, and for a Mountain fan who knows what these songs are supposed to sound like, it is painful to listen to this disc. There are some highlights to be found here (e.g. Crossroads, House of the Rising Sun), but they're buried in so much poorly performed (and generally poorly recorded) sonic junk, that it's just not worth a Mountain fan's time or money. Mountain is capable of so much more... Submitted by Glen (Kennewick, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Great music, Leslie on fire ,Disc 1 poor recording Im a huge Mountain/Leslie West Fan. As soon as I heard about this release I was exited. Disc 1 : I really think a better recording could have been found.
The music is awsome but Leslies' voice is shot.
Disc 2 : INCREDIBLE !!!!
Ive seen Mountain on a few of the last area dates and these recorings are great live stuff. The performance is fantastic in all respects!!
I would have prefered a disc 1 from the same tour as disc 2 was from. Submitted by bigmako1j (New Jersey) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
West At His Best This live recording comes closest to the time I saw Leslie, Corky and Ritchie
perform in Berkeley. Leslie
apparently borrowed another band's amps, promptly blowing them up halfway through the opening number!
"Eruption" is the best live Mountain recording to date. No one tortures a guitar like Leslie; the outrageous versions of "Mississippi Queen" and "Why Dontcha"
on these CD's prove it.
As Mountain used to print on their album covers, "Best enjoyed at maximum volume."
Indeed! Buy "Eruption" and crank it up!

Crossroads alone is worth the price of these disks This is good stuff. And pleny of it. With the two hiddentracks, Stormy Monday with Felix, and the other one, it clocks in at 130 minutes. Thats alot of Leslie/Corky.
And the jam. Croosroads is great, and many of the others. A nice live version of Why Dontcha finally. Nantucket runs through alot of rock and roll classics, pretty cool.

A good taste Eruption offers a good taste of what its like to be at a Mountain show. I have been to about 30 over the last 10 years. While some nights are better than others for Leslie and Corky...the two cd's in this set, include some real explosive stuff (the squeal and howl of the solo on Yasgurs Farm is vintage West). While the quality is that of a good bootleg, it is muffled at times, especially on cd one. With that said there are songs done live here that will probably never be performed again (Spark, Hard Times, Rocky Mountain Way). The hidden tracks are not marked in the notes, so I have no idea where they are from, but judging by the sound quality, they are old.
Two weeks later I still pop this CD in daily and crank it up in the car, and if you are a Mountain fan (the few teh proud the brave) you will enjoy Eruption. Submitted by j_iannuzzi (Greenwich, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Eruption music CDs
$13.45 Leslie West isn't a particularly innovative guitarist, and his style and approach have barely moved an eyelash since he first broke into the public consciousness with Mountain back in the early '70s, but boy can this guy get tone! | | Robin Trower Seven Moons CD (2008) Digipak
Eruption album
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter century. The results impressively continue where Truce left off, as Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's silvery guitar runs. Gary Husband fills the drum slot adequately if inconspicuously, but his contributions are mixed so far under Bruce's vocals and Trower's guitar that they are secondary. ...

| | Cal Tjader Descarga CD (1972)
Eruption music CDs
$9.59 Descarga is a merger of two albums recorded near the beginning of the '70s -- the fascinating studio session Aqua Dulce and the self-explanatory Live at the Funky Quarters. Having not yet lost his yen for adventure from the Verve days, Tjader neatly integrates Al Zulaica's Rhodes electric piano, electronic effects, and occasionally horns and voices into a bedrock Latin format, and the combination works even at its most outlandish. Two of the reasons why Aqua Dulce stays on track are the solid Latin percussion team of Pete and Coke Escovedo and Michael Smithe, and that Tjader's rippling, to-the-point, easily adaptable vibraphone manner hadn't changed a whit over the years. The title track, "Agua Dulce (Cool Ade)," is a lot of fun, with its electronic bubbling and straight Latin grooves, and Cal even tackles the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter," adding pink noise and spacy obligatos from ...

| | Patrice Pike Fencing Under Fire CD (2002)
Eruption CD music
$13.05 Patrice Pike makes an interesting point about artistic creation. Whereas a critic can explain the arrangements of a particular song, its lyrics, and the tone of the vocalist's voice, he or she can't really explain the creative magic that makes it all work. Music, like religion, remains part mystery. A critic, nonetheless, can hopefully recognize the real thing when he or she sees it, and Fencing Under Fire qualifies. Pike, formerly of Sister 7, is joined by the Blackbox Rebellion, consisting of guitarist Wayne Sutton, drummer Michael Hale, bassist Danny Jesus Belltran, and percussionist John Bush. "Dominique" serves as a tuneful opener, but the funky "Jackknife Girl" and Stones-styled "Ms. Ramona" dig a bit deeper. While Pike's vocals work well on the lighter, melodic material, she really comes into her own on rockers like "Ms. Ramona" and "All My Love." When she delivers a line like, "Sun's going down/You're nowhere to be found/You're wasting all my love," the listener feels the emotional impact. She also cuts loose on "Angels," requesting divine assistance in the form of a rock & roll prayer. There are also a number of gentler, kinder tunes, like "The Wreckage" and "Sweet November," filled with great hooks, acoustic guitar, and animated percussion. The no-nonsense arrangements adjust to the needs of each song and provide plenty of cushion for Pike's powerful voice. Fun and catchy, Fencing Under Fire will please anyone who enjoys great vocals, a little bit of rock guitar, and smart songwriting. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
Many people have come to know Patrice Pike from her years as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the popular Austin band 'Sister Seven'. Patrice and Sister Seven toured the United States and Western Europe in support of three independent releases and three major label albums. From Sister Seven's jam-band beginnings to their Billboard-charting radio singles, they headlined clubs and supported massive shed tours. Chris Riemenschneider of the Austin American Statesman sums up the band's multifaceted success; "Back when it was still Little Sister, Sister Seven epitomized the Austin jam-band phenomenon. Eventually though, the quartet sharpened its songwriting and recording style ...
