Johnny Hiland Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Smokin' This guy's talent is amazing. Teamed up with a great band, and producer, this disc rocks, twangs and shreds with monster chops and songs. If you are a player or just appreciate guitar playing, buy this. You won't be sorry.
Someone should get Johnny together with John-5 ( Lowery ) and they could take over the world. Submitted by fleminge (Binghamton, New York) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Another great guitarist found!!! Great cd. If you like great guitar playing, you cannot go wrong with Johnny Hiland. It's no wonder he made a guest appearance at a G3 concert. Submitted by acquaplanet (Porto Seguro, Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Excellant one of the best string benders around. I got a short glimps of Johnny Hiland on a local tv news show he was playing Until we meet again. I couldn't get the song out of my head for weeks even tho I only heard about 20 seconds I ordered the CD here, and I've played it many times and I want to say I'm a fan of the Late George Harrison and Johnny rates up there with him. I would recommend this CD to all guitars players or people who enjoy listening to guitar music at its best. Submitted by rnskyler (Stilesville,In, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great Tele sound. I really like this guys playing but I would like to hear a little more of the Gattonesque sound.I just hope he goes in that direction in the future instead of sounding like Vai or Satriani as to me that would be a waste of an very talented picker. It would be cool if he got together with Greg Koch and did something like the Hellecasters! THIS ONE WILL MAKE YOU SMILE FROM EAR TO EAR! EXCELLENT first release for this guitar giant! Though there's nothing groundbeaking here (Gatton, Morse, and Satriani have "been there, done it"), Hiland has a strong sense of melody and is good at mixing melody with impressive chops. Lots of the songs remind me of Joe Satriani, and lots of the "chicken-pickin'" ones remind me of Steve Morse, Albert Lee and Danny Gatton. But they're all being played by the SAME guitar player, and that's pretty impressive! The songs are very melodic and "catchy", which make them memorable. And the "chicken-pickin'" ones are melodic, up-tempo, and loaded with great playing. They will make you smile 'cuz they're so fun to listen to! This CD is highly recommended to fans of instrumental guitar music. Submitted by Frank (Ridgefield, CT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Johnny Hiland album
$8.69 On his second album for the Concord Jazz label, guitarist Robben Ford stays pretty much to the formula of Blue Moon from 2001. He concentrates on playing, singing, and covering great songs (and even writes a few) with interesting arrangements, inspired solos, and crisp, clean production that lets the song shine through the players. Much has been made of Ford's eclecticism and that is reflected in his choice of material here, though he never strays from the blues or R&B into jazz or fusion. Ford's selection of session players reflects his divergent interests as well: Edgar Winter appears on saxophone, while John Mayall and Ivan Neville guest along with horn bosses Bob Malach and Dan Fornero and Ford's road band. Opening the set with the title track, written by soul man Jackie Edwards, Ford lays out his formula immediately: a tight horn chart for tenor and baritone saxes, as well as trumpet; a crystal clear, expressive vocal delivery; and Ford's signature stinging guitar in the solo break lifts proceedings ...

| | John 5 Vertigo CD (2004)
Johnny Hiland music CDs
$13.65 Fresh out of Marilyn Manson's band, guitarist John5 wasted no time issuing his solo debut, 2004's Vertigo. And for Manson disciples expecting the album to strictly follow to the game plan that John5 followed with his previous employer, you're sure to be in for a surprise. While there are tracks that are certainly Manson-esque, John5 shows that he's one of the more versatile guitar pickers on the scene today, as more than half the album wouldn't sound out of place being played on-stage at the Grand Ole Opry. Set the CD on "random play" and you're sure to fool others into thinking it's a compilation of several top guitar shredders. Things kick off with a pair of tracks that are ...

| | Steve Vai Real Illusions: Reflections CD (2005)
Johnny Hiland album
$11.05 Steve Vai remains an eclectic rogue in the world of guitar virtuosos. While his staggering chops precede him, Vai is known for favoring artistic, emotional expression over blazing six-string shredding just for its own sake. With an ensemble that includes bassist Billy Sheehan, drummer Jeremy Colson, and percussionist Gregg Bissonette, Vai presents his first new studio work since 1999's THE ULTRA ZONE.

| | Eric Johnson Bloom CD (2005)
Johnny Hiland CD music
$10.69 It's no secret that the time gap between albums by guitarist Eric Johnson is on par with such notorious 'hibernators' as Boston. And the arrival of his fourth all-new studio release, Bloom, was no different, as it appeared nearly nine years after the release of 1996's Venus Isle. Whereas most guitar heroes of the late '80s and early '90s were all about reeling off a zillion notes per second, Johnson was the exception, as he penned songs that saw his guitar supplying the melody where a voice could have been. This 16-track release (his second for Steve Vai's Favored Nations label) is split into three separate sections -- 'Prelude,' 'Courante,' and 'Allemande' -- which are supposedly "grouped together in terms of vibe and style." Highlights include "Summer Jam" (which does a splendid job of showcasing his guitar tone), the chicken'-pickin' ditty "Tribute to Jerry Reed," ...

Johnny Hiland CD music
$42.05 Bobby Caldwell's PERFECT ISLAND NIGHTS features 14 tracks including "Sukiyaki (Forever)" and the bonus tune "Crazy For Your Love (Morning Mix)."
The veteran blue-eyed soul singer has been busy since 1995 (the year he released his last literal pop album, Soul Survivor), recording albums of standards along with his Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin-styled soundtrack work and counting the royalties from the 100 or so covers or samples of his best-known hit, "What You Won't Do for Love" -- so preoccupied, in fact, that's it's been easy to forget just how skilled he is at delivering easygoing romantic pop, whether it's funky and percussive (as on the brassy, bouncy "Call Me Up"), perfect for Latin salsa dancing (the balmy "Donna"), or simply laid-back and moonlit (the title track). Caldwell is at the top of his charming game on this modern adult contemporary ...
| | Jack Teagarden 1930 Studio Sessions CD (2006)
Johnny Hiland music CDs
$16.49 In 2006, the Jazz Oracle label released a thrilling 25-track collection of recordings that document JAck Teagarden's professional activity during the first grueling months of the Great Depression. Unlike his collaborations with Eddie Condon, these records do not necessarily spotlight Teagarden as soloist or vocalist. 1930 was a banner year in the golden age of squeaky clean crooners and pop vocalists. The music is deliciously dated and heavily arranged, with an innocent charm that is peculiarly reassuring. ...
