With their sixth studio album, 2004's Fiendish Regression, Swedish death metal pioneers Grave dangerously tread the very fine line between staying the course and outright stagnation. The group's third outing since the departure of original leader Jörgen Sandström, it has a certain workmanlike quality to it, and, if its title were to be taken at all literally, its contents sound neither like a concerted return to the band's roots, nor all that fiendish, to be perfectly honest. It also takes its sweet time getting a head of steam, lurching painfully into gear with opening cuts "Last Journey," "Reborn," and "Awakening," and only fanning the flames a little higher when fourth track "Breeder" rolls into view. Frustratingly, it too alternates brilliant moments of flailing velocity with some of the most lead-footed, mind-numbing riffing ever heard this side of doom, so that one can't help but wonder at this point if Grave actually intended to split the album into slow/fast halves. In any case, much better is the galloping rush of next track "Trial by Fire," and even if simple speed isn't enough to energize the mostly forgettable material leading up to next to last number "Bloodfeast," this at least surely qualifies as a winner and, arguably, the album's saving grace. Unfortunately, by then it's a little too late to save the day, and, despite an also passable attempt from closer "Heretic," Fiendish Regression shuts down shop without leaving much of a mark. Devoted fans may ultimately defend Grave's unwillingness to tamper with their well-established formula or even argue that, as one of the founding fathers of Swedish death metal, the group deserves a little leniency for taking an album off; but newcomers will likely leave perplexed, wondering what all the fuss is about. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Obituary Frozen In Time CD (2005)
Fiendish Regression music CDs
$15.65 The return of Obituary in 2005 came as a surprise, for the band hadn't been active since the mid-'90s. They sort of petered out after World Demise in 1994, releasing the ho-hum Back from the Dead in 1997 and then calling it a day as the bandmembers busied themselves elsewhere, most visibly as guitarist Allen West enjoyed a lot of success in Six Feet Under. Obituary's reunion album, Frozen in Time, wasn't only a surprise because of the long absence, though. It also came as a surprise because it's so darn good, up there with the best the band ever recorded, even in their heyday. Clocking in at a brisk ten songs in 35 minutes, Frozen in Time is a perfect Obituary album -- almost so perfect it invites such criticisms as "more of the same." But more of the same is perfectly fine when it's done this well, especially for longtime fans nostalgic for the good ...

| | Meat Loaf Welcome To The Neighborhood CD (1995)
Fiendish Regression songs
$6.59 It's been a long, dramatic road for Meat Loaf. Since 1977's BAT OUT OF HELL he's been pouring the soul of a consummate romantic into his recordings, and bringing back the epic Casanova qualities of silent film heartthrobs to rock.
Appropriately, pop songsmith Dianne Warren is now contributing to Meat Loaf's repertoire, and the cinematic, unrestrained emotion of WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD bears witness to some of the most heartfelt pop released in 1995. The anthemic spectacles of true love--grand boy-meets-girl overtures like "45 Seconds Of Ecstasy," or lofty admissions such as "I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)"--are what Meat Loaf is all about. He is the Hallmark card of rock and roll, the sentimental lover--he wants you to know that he cares.
Nearly twenty years after he rolled onto the scene, Meat Loaf is still the king of rockin' romance. WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD brings him right back to your door and straight ...
| | Meat Loaf Heaven & Hell CD (1994) Germany
Fiendish Regression album
$9.09 HEAVEN & HELL is a 1993 collection that takes turns presenting songs by the dramatic rock singer Meat Loaf and the pop vocalist Bonnie Tyler. The CD includes hits such as "Bat Out Of Hell" and "Total Eclipse Of The Heart."
This is a rather pointless collection of tunes written (mostly) by Jim Steinman performed alternately by Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler. This sampler is one of those CDs that seemed like a good idea at the time (1993). Tyler had scored her big hits by that time, and Meat Loaf hadn't quite lit up the boards with Bat out of Hell II in the year this was issued. Steinman is the thread that holds this set together, full of bombast, excess, and rock & roll theater. Tyler's "It's a Heartache" is not here, but "Total Eclipse of the Heart," "Holdin' ...
