Ok, ok, we get it! Rock is not dead! Or, we could even suckle on the professional trendmakers a little harder and say that rock is "back" maaaaaan! Rolling Blackouts are about as cocksure a group as you'll find this side of Mick and friends. The debate is only which side of Keith and company we're talking about here. The gut wants to jiggle in all its beer-swollen glory to the ultra-groover "Loophole Blues" or air-drum like a maniac to the three, yes three, drum solos found on the under-three-minute "Rock Paper Scissors." Yet, there's something inherently foul about the sub-"Black Dog" riffage on "Ms. Bitter" or inversely, wussy harmonies on "Velvet Revenge." If all it takes is some fiery guitar distortion to get you off, then this here gang offers some of the dankest fuzz around recorded -- surprisingly -- by Stones Throw funk mastering expert Dave Cooley. Check in particular the Luftwaffe approved dive-bomber riffs on "Lots of Love." But like many bands who are convinced that history is the new rock & roll, Rolling Blackouts can't seem to stay on any one page long enough to get it right. ~ Joshua Glazer

Alternative Press (p.113) - "[T]hey mash up Iggy Pop's manic unpredictability with Led Zeppelin's monster blues and the Hives' swagger to create their own distinct '70s AM-radio cocktail." - 4 out of 5 Rolling Blackouts Black Is Beautiful Songs Black Is Beautiful Review

Black Is Beautiful album
$10.85 On Darkest Hour's third album, Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation, it should come as no surprise that the lyrics are as vitriolic as the vocal timbre, decrying and describing a society where guns, violence, and malevolent media rule. The band rolls through twisted grindcore progressions in the background with reasonable aplomb. The album unexpectedly concludes with an uncharacteristic instrumental, "Veritas, Aequitas," whose piano, acoustic guitar, and air-guitar-hero soloing come as nothing less than a total shock after the mayhem of the preceding eight tracks. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Rapture Echoes CD (2003)
Black Is Beautiful CD music
$8.49 If you're so inclined, it's easy to play spot-the-influence with the Rapture, one of the best of New York City's neo-punk-funk crop. One track suggests Robert Smith fronting the Pop Group, another evokes a collision between A Certain Ratio and New Order, etc. But that approach would entail missing the forest for the trees. Like millions of bands before them, the Rapture leaves a trail of its musical inspirations, but this isn't 1981, and ECHOES ...

When the Shins bowled over music fans and critics alike in 2001 seemingly out of nowhere (but actually out of Albuquerque and years of playing together) with OH, INVERTED WORLD, their stunningly beautiful debut, the comparisons came ...

| | Robin Trower Seven Moons CD (2008) Digipak
Black Is Beautiful CD music
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter century. The results impressively continue where Truce left off, as Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented ...
