Personnel: Fred Frith (guitar, violin, keyboards, bass guitar, percussion); Robert Lax, Sandra M'Bow (vocals); Mikaela Dietel, Fabrizio Appelius (accordion); Tim Hodgkinson (clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone). More of a real soundtrack album than is usually the case, Middle of the Moment was assembled by Fred Frith from a documentary film about a train ride through North Africa. Thus, there are equal parts ambient sounds, conversation, roadside songs, native drumming, and additional music. In large part, he was entirely successful, weaving natural sounds in and out of composed areas and selecting some gorgeous samples such as the throaty singing of a young girl on the opening track. Frith's own music is very recognizable as such, ranging from drawn-out, evocative guitar plaints to jaunty, acerbic accordion dances. Relatively unknown, this release fits in comfortably with many of his mature works and should be sought out by fans of albums of his such as Pacifica. ~ Brian OlewnickThe Wire (p.58) - "The music, in particular Frith's own guitar and violin, is some of his subtlest work, a kind of storytelling without words that conjures an odd, spellbound state." Mojo (Publisher) (p.105) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Frith's dextrous touch makes it way beyond." Middle Of The Moment Music Middle Of The Moment Songs Middle Of The Moment Review

| | Ten Years After Cricklewood Green CD (1970)
Middle Of The Moment
$6.45 Ten Years After: Alvin Lee (vocals, guitar); Chick Churchill (organ); Leo Lyons (bass); Ric Lee (drums). Recorded at Olympic Studio 1, London, England. All songs written by Alvin Lee. One of the most noted of the progressive blues bands to emerge from the U.K.'s Summer Of Love in 1967, Ten Years After arguably reached its peak with its appearance at the Woodstock festival in 1969. First released a year later in 1970, CRICKLEWOOD GREEN contains the band's hit single, "Love Like a Man," as well as some of the bluesy guitar workouts, courtesy of the virtuoso Alvin Lee, that made it famous. Cricklewood Green provides the best example of Ten Years After's recorded sound. On this album, the band and engineer Andy Johns mix studio tricks and sound effects, blues-based song structures, a driving rhythm section, and Alvin Lee's signature lightning-fast guitar licks into a unified album that flows nicely from start to finish. Cricklewood Green opens with a pair of bluesy rockers, with "Working on the Road" propelled ...
