Although Funk Fantastique is a somewhat thrown-together affair, the music presented on the album represents solid work by organist/keyboardist Charles Earland and company. The material at the center of the album (tracks four through seven) was originally released as Charles III in 1972, and the surrounding tracks are previously unreleased. Since the unreleased material comes from two different sessions, three different ensembles grace Funk Fantastique. The presence of singer Joe Lee Wilson on the dated "Auburn Delight" (think cheesy '70s jazz) offers even more variety. Through it all, though, Earland's funky organ and keyboard brings all the material together under the banner of soul-jazz. Even on an unsuccessful and sexist piece like "Auburn Delight," Earland's organ work has a brisk, spunky quality that makes the instrumental portion of the song sparkle. Much better, however, are "Charles III" and "Girl, You Need a Change of Mind," both supported by large, energetic horn sections. There's also some solid guitar work from Jack Turner on the latter piece. Among the unreleased tracks, there's a fun version of "Never Can Say Goodbye," the old Jackson 5 hit, with nice soprano work by Jimmy Vass. Funk Fantastique never ties up all of its loose ends, but it nonetheless lives up to its title. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Thoughts Of You
Mary Ann McSweeney Thoughts Of You CD  (2001)

Funk Fantastique album
CD $30.39  Audio Samples
With Thoughts of You, Mary Ann McSweeney reveals herself to be -- in no particular order -- a talented bassist and bandleader, a resourceful composer, and an imaginative arranger. To begin with, the musicians on the album are outstanding. Opting for the slightly unusual frontline of trombone and saxophone, McSweeney enlists Mike Fahn and Donny McCaslin, respectively. Fahn plays both valve and slide trombones, and McCaslin switches between tenor and soprano, giving McSweeney additional colors to work with. Henry Hey, a budding master, provides wonderful orchestral viewpoints at the piano. Tim Horner, at the drums, serves as McSweeney's partner in rhythm, and percussionist Joe Mowatt appears on three tracks. The album gets off the ground with "R.B.'s Tribute," a blues co-written by McSweeney and Fahn in honor of Ray Brown. Four of the remaining seven tracks are McSweeney ...

This is the first and only release on Flying Monster Music. Truth be told, the only reason for the music company is the logo design, which turned out pretty well. I was hoping someday to make it into a tee shirt and flog enough of 'em to perhaps treat myself to a bottle of good scotch. A gold CD is an improbable dream, but ...
Never Let Her Go
David Gates Never Let Her Go CD  (1975)

Funk Fantastique album
CD $9.69  4.6 stars
No musicians are credited except for the associate producer title given to keyboard player Larry Knechtel and retaining Bread photographer, Frank Bez, as well as engineer Bruce Morgan, who played an important part in David Gates' First from 1973 (and who would engineer Bread's 1977 comeback, Lost Without Your Love ). The lead singer of the '70s very recognizable soft rock hit machine delivers his second solo disc, part of something a retailer once referred to as "breadcrumbs," the result of Bread's breakup. Certainly the solo recordings by James Griffin, Larry Knechtel, and Gates were nowhere as entertaining as the full band, but each time, that comes down to the material. This album sounds so much like another Bread album that there is no doubt who the main force was. Where First worked better the more Gates got away from the trademark music, his second solo album embraces the Bread formula wholeheartedly, "Playin' on My Guitar" could have been the B-side of any of the group's singles. "Greener Days" is up-tempo, not as hard as "Let Your Love Go," but singsongy and with hit potential. Emulating sentiment and style from George Harrison's All Things Must Pass album on "Greener Days," even lifting little musical nuances of Harrison's "Hear Me Lord," it's just too bad Gates didn't take more from the Beatles guitarist's landmark disc. The reflective/poignant line "...our greener days...turned into grey" certainly is another way of saying "all things must pass." "Strangers," meanwhile, takes much from Neil Young's "Cowgirl in the Sand," much, but again, not nearly enough. The title track is classic ...
