Live Recording

2 LPs on 1 CD: WARMING UP!/INTERLUDE.
Personnel: Doug Watkins, Henry Grimes (bass instrument).
Warming Up! collects two trio albums recorded by pianist Billy Taylor in 1960-1961, the first under the same title, the second Interlude. On the first 12 pieces he's joined by bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Ray Mosca, on the later 11, Doug Watkins takes Grimes' place. The similar setup and personnel mean that both albums flow together as a piece, though each carries a separate mood owing to the albums' different conceptions. Warming Up! was slotted for a radio transcription company, which meant that the tracks would be kept short (three minutes or less). This design gives pieces like "That's Where It's At" and "Don't Bug Me" a nice, compact unity while still allowing Taylor plenty of room for his fluid style. The Interlude tracks, on the other hand, worked more like short suites from a symphony, moving through the beginning, middle, and end of a love affair. While the compositions run a little longer here, most stay within the four- to five-minute range. The mood of pieces like "You Tempt Me" and "Did You Dream Too" is much more introspective. Taken together, the two recordings sound like two set lists, one recorded in the early evening, the other late at night. Taylor's light touch sensitively captures both frames of mind, making Warming Up! a fine introduction to a fine pianist. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

Bobby Timmons Prestige Trio Sessions CD  (2003)

Warming Up!
CD $8.89  5 stars Audio Samples
THE PRESTIGE TRIO SESSIONS contains 2 LPs on 1 CD: LITTLE BAREFOOT SOUL (1964)/CHUN-KING (1964).
Personnel: Bobby Timmons (piano); Sam Jones, Keter Betts (bass); Albert "Tootie" Heath, Ray Lucas (drums).
Recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 18, 1964 and August 12, 1964.
Audio Remasterer: Kirk Felton.
Liner Note Authors: Joel Dorn; Chris Albertson.
Recording information: Van Gelder's Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (06/18/1964-08/12/1964).
This CD reissue combines two long-available Prestige LPs by Bobby Timmons, Little Barefoot Soul and Chun-King. The first date was actually the pianist's debut for the label, and it nearly didn't take place at all. A quintet session suddenly turned into a trio with bassist Sam Jones and Ray Lucas, the latter a last minute substitution on drums. Although Timmons' jazz immortality was assured with his earlier hit "Moanin'," most of the originals sound as if they were written shortly beforehand and were still evolving. The standout among them is easily
"A Little Barefoot Soul," a piece which gets underway without the leader at all. But its catchy gospel flavor eventually gives way to a driving, bluesy hard bop setting. Timmons' solo interpretation of the spiritual "Nobody Knows the ...

Johnny Griffin Pisces CD  (1962)

Warming Up!
CD $8.75  Top 500
When Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis entered a New York studio with producer Orrin Keepnews on May 3, 1962, they did some things that were unusual for the two-tenor team. They played mostly ballads, they didn't engage in any tenor battles and -- most surprising of all -- they didn't perform together on any of the tunes. Griffin was featured on four songs, Davis on another four. The same rhythm section -- Horace Parlan, bassist Buddy Catlett and drummer Art Taylor -- was always present, but Parlan played piano on the songs featuring Griffin and celeste on the songs featuring Davis. For whatever reason, the performances remained in the can for 42 years; they weren't even mastered until 1966, and they finally saw the light of day when Fantasy released Pisces in 2004. Pisces begs the following question: why, in God's name, would two saxmen who had as strong a rapport as Griffin and Davis not perform together when they were in the studio at the same time? Emphasizing ballads was an excellent idea, but wouldn't it have made more sense for them to do it as co-leaders of a quintet? According to jazz critic Larry Hollis -- who wrote ...

Personnel: Herb Ellis (guitar); Charlie Mariano (alto saxophone); Jimmy Giuffre (tenor saxophone); Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet); Oscar Peterson (piano); Ray Brown (double bass); Alvin Stoller (drums).
High quality small-group jazz from the Texas-born guitarist Herb Ellis, accompanied here by a stellar band that includes the pianist Oscar Peterson, the saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre, and trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison. Ellis concocts a heady swirl of bebop and blues in a set that blends a majority of originals with a couple of standards, Rodgers and Hart's "Have You Met Miss Jones," and George Gershwin's "Somebody Loves Me."
In the midst of his tenure with the Oscar Peterson Trio, Herb Ellis had the chance to turn the tables on his boss and employ him as a sideman, though the keyboard virtuoso strangely reigns in his chops and pretty much stays in the background. This pair of sessions was first issued on a Norgran LP and finally reissued as a Verve CD in early 2006. The first four tracks add Jimmy Giuffre (alternating between baritone sax, tenor sax, and clarinet) and trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, along with fellow Peterson sideman Ray Brown and drummer Alvin Stoller. Ellis' originals include the easygoing "Sweetheart Blues" and the cooking bop vehicle ...

Liner Note Authors: Jimmy Raney; Leonard Feather.
Recording information: New York, NY (07/23/1956-08/01/1956).
Photographer: Carole Gallety.
Assisted by the trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, the post-bop guitarist Jimmy Raney is heard here in a 1956 session performing a varied set that displays his lyrical, often cerebral playing to its best advantage, including the standards "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "Isn't It Romantic."
Though Jimmy Raney recorded under his own name as early as 1953, this 1956 set is regarded as his arrival as a leader. Raney is as fine an arranger as he is a guitarist. These eight tracks with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone (another fine arranger in a soloist's role) shine with the ease and fluidity of the best of the cool sessions recorded at the dawn of hard bop. ...
