| | Eric Kloss First Class! CD Eric Kloss Discography of CDs
2 Lps On 1 CD. W/ "Grits & Gravy"
2 LPs on 1 CD: GRITS & GRAVY/FIRST CLASS KLOSS!. Personnel: Jimmy Owens (trumpet, flugelhorn); Jaki Byard, Cedar Walton (piano); Leroy Vinnegar, Richard Davis (bass instrument); Alan Dawson (drums). First Class! collects two solid Eric Kloss albums from 1966 and 1967, the first titled Grits and Gravy, the latter First Class Kloss! Over the course of 16 pieces, however, saxophonist Kloss fronts three different groups: a quartet, quintet, and septet. While this never seems disjointed, it does occasionally feel like a best-of package, especially when the female vocal group joins in on pieces like "Slow Hot Wind." This is especially true on the first eight pieces from Grits and Gravy. Bizarre hodgepodges like the title track with its combination of background vocals, a large ensemble, and repetitive funky riffs remind one of a bad '60s movie soundtrack. These tracks are juxtaposed with incredibly edgy work by Kloss, pianist Jaki Byard, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Alan Dawson. The intensity of "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise" still sounds fresh 20 years after the fact, and the chemistry among the players is explosive. Luckily, the two bonus tracks, "When I Fall" and "Psychedelicatessen Rag," come from these sessions. Kloss is joined by trumpeter Jimmy Owens, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Dawson for the last half-dozen tracks, and the work here is uniformly excellent. "The Chasin' Game" and "African Cookbook" take advantage of the duel-horn lineup, and the quintet stretches both of these pieces out for seven minutes. While the overall effect of First Class! is a bit scattered, there's a great deal of excellent music on the disc that's sure to please the Kloss fan. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

First Class!
$15.29 Personnel: Robben Ford (vocals, guitar); Neal Evans (Hammond b-3 organ); Toss Panos (drums). Audio Mixer: John Paterno. Photographer: George Wells. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs up the energy from there, jumping into the instrumental "Indianola." This is where Ford seamlessly combines rock, blues, jazz, and surf into ...
| | Herbie Hancock Gershwin's World CD (1998) Hybrid; SACD Hybrid
First Class!
$15.49 GERSHWIN'S WORLD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "St. Louis Blues" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s). This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Gershwin's World is a tour de force for Herbie Hancock, transcending genre and label, and ranking among the finest recordings of his lengthy career. Released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin's birth, this disc features jazzman Hancock with a classy collection of special guests. The most surprising of Hancock's guest stars is Joni Mitchell, who delivers a gorgeously sensual vocal on "The Man I Love," then provides an airy, worldly take on "Summertime." On these two tracks, she shows she has come a long way from her folksinger beginnings to become a first-class jazz singer in her own right. Stevie Wonder's unmistakable harmonica complements Mitchell's singing on "Summertime" and ...

| | Roland Vazquez Quintet Live CD (2007)
First Class!
$6.00 "Drummer and composer Roland Vazquez has been at the vanguard of progressive Latin jazz since the 1970's, creating albums that feed off Afro-Cuban elements while opening up the forms to higher levels of interplay among members of his group. "Quintet Live" features a strong lineup that includes Mark Soskin on piano, Walt Weiskopf on tenor sax and flute, Anthony Jackson on bass, and Ricardo Candelaria on Latin percussion. The leader's challenging original compositions, often based on funky Afro-Cuban rhythms such as songo, seem to liberate the band's improvisational talents. Occasional chamber jazz type interludes tap a more ballad conscious mood, with charming and unpredictable results." - Mark Holston/JAZZIZ (Jan/Feb)"Roland Vazquez is known as a Latin jazz drummer and percussion whoincorporates a forceful rock inflection in his playing and composing. Theselive concert sessions done in Canada took a full decade to be issued pasttheir recording dates. There are some production flaws and a bit of thinsound, but they are not detrimental to the excellent music and musicianship.Vazquez and percussionist Ricardo Candelaria back a powerhouse band ofveterans saxophonist Walt Weiskopf, electric bass guitar pioneer AnthonyJackson and especially the brilliant pianist Mark Soskin shine brightly.
