| | Eric Kloss First Class! CD Eric Kloss Discography of CDs
First Class! collects two solid Eric Kloss albums from 1966 and 1967, the first titled Grits and Gravy, the latter First Class Kloss! Over the course of 16 pieces, however, saxophonist Kloss fronts three different groups: a quartet, quintet, and septet. While this never seems disjointed, it does occasionally feel like a best-of package, especially when the female vocal group joins in on pieces like "Slow Hot Wind." This is especially true on the first eight pieces from Grits and Gravy. Bizarre hodgepodges like the title track with its combination of background vocals, a large ensemble, and repetitive funky riffs remind one of a bad '60s movie soundtrack. These tracks are juxtaposed with incredibly edgy work by Kloss, pianist Jaki Byard, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Alan Dawson. The intensity of "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise" still sounds fresh 20 years after the fact, and the chemistry among the players is explosive. Luckily, the two bonus tracks, "When I Fall" and "Psychedelicatessen Rag," come from these sessions. Kloss is joined by trumpeter Jimmy Owens, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Dawson for the last half-dozen tracks, and the work here is uniformly excellent. "The Chasin' Game" and "African Cookbook" take advantage of the duel-horn lineup, and the quintet stretches both of these pieces out for seven minutes. While the overall effect of First Class! is a bit scattered, there's a great deal of excellent music on the disc that's sure to please the Kloss fan. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.

| | Peter White Playin Favorites CD (2006)
First Class! music CDs
$9.29 For his tenth full-length album, Playin' Favourites, British smooth jazz giant Peter White decided to, as the title suggests, turn to some of his favorite tracks from the '60s, '70s, and '80s, giving each of them his own interpretation (he did a similar thing in 1994's Reflections). Working with longtime producer Paul Brown, as well as musicians Boney James, Rick Braun, and Dave Camp, among others, White successfully turns the 11 songs on Playin' Favourites into instant crossover jazz hits. Mainly this means adding horns and keyboards to the background while the guitarist lithely moves around from the melody into lush improvisationally based solos, rendering them much slicker and smoother than they were before (although granted, he didn't have to do much to turn Bacharach's James Bond classic "The Look of Love" into something so ...

| | Roland Vazquez Quintet Live CD (2007)
First Class! songs
$6.00 "Drummer and composer Roland Vazquez has been at the vanguard of progressive Latin jazz since the 1970's, creating albums that feed off Afro-Cuban elements while opening up the forms to higher levels of interplay among members of his group. "Quintet Live" features a strong lineup that includes Mark Soskin on piano, Walt Weiskopf on tenor sax and flute, Anthony Jackson on bass, and Ricardo Candelaria on Latin percussion. The leader's challenging original compositions, often based on funky Afro-Cuban rhythms such as songo, seem to liberate the band's improvisational talents. Occasional chamber jazz type interludes tap a more ballad conscious mood, with charming and unpredictable results." - Mark Holston/JAZZIZ (Jan/Feb)"Roland Vazquez is known as a Latin jazz drummer and percussion whoincorporates a forceful rock inflection in his playing and composing. Theselive concert sessions done in Canada took a full decade to be issued pasttheir recording dates. There are some production flaws and a bit of thinsound, but they are not detrimental to the excellent music and musicianship.Vazquez and percussionist Ricardo Candelaria back a powerhouse band ofveterans saxophonist Walt Weiskopf, electric bass guitar pioneer AnthonyJackson and especially the brilliant pianist Mark Soskin shine brightly. | | Revisions Revised Observations CD (2007)
First Class! album
$11.49 Hovering somewhere between punk-pop and emo, the Revisions set themselves apart from their peers in both subgenres by performing their material on acoustic instruments, and on their debut album, Revised Observations, the gambit certainly works in their favor. While Douglas Burns and Hajji Husayn's songs might have sounded rather ordinary run through a stack of Marshall amps, here the melodies are carried by the thick strum of their acoustic guitars, bringing their tuneful side to the forefront, and Burns' vocals get a chance to shine without having to compete with the buzzsaw roar of an electric band. Burns is already known for his work with the Observers and the Red Dons, and his command of the studio is obvious on Revised Observations; while the songs may be melodically simple, ...
