| | Radian Juxtaposition CD Radian Discography of CDs
Vienna's Radian continue with layers of electronics and instrumentation on their third release, Juxtaposition, out on Thrill Jockey Records. Radian recorded all of the electronic tracks in Vienna before bringing their set-up to Chicago to finish various tracking with the aid of John McEntire at Soma Studios, an influence at the deck that shines through on Juxtaposition. Delicate grooves reveal themselves on tracks like "Vertigo" and "Helix," stretching waves of bass tones, percussion and electronics that build on one another. Scratchy stretches of noise layered on top of the focused instrumentation of bass, guitar and drums create subtle melodies that lie underneath tracks like "Transistor" and "Tester." The influence of Tortoise is not to go unnoted here, but an influence that many may have been forgotten with Tortoise's debut -- longer, atmospheric tracks of tinny percussion on top of slow, drawn-out basslines and sprinkles of vibraphone that are definite highlights on Radian tracks "Ontario" and "Nord." Radian created a record that listeners have to let envelope them slowly -- and, if patient enough, Juxtaposition will reveal treasures from an aural dig that are a wonderful, satisfying surprise. ~ David Serra

| | Venetian Snares Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding CD (2004)
Juxtaposition songs
$14.69 The flowering of digitally processed origami on the cover of Aaron Funk's seventh Venetian Snares full-length for Planet Mu signals that Autechre is a reference point for the music inside. Far from being a slavish imitator, though, Funk is not only able to crunch the same high-volume numbers as Autechre (something few producers can manage), but also create tracks that expand the duo's straitjacket-tight musical aesthetic. Like Autechre, Funk's productions quicken or slow according to an internal rhythm, and he creates his productions from innumerable byte-size chunks of toneless digital percussion that together sound as though they've been sampled from thousands of different sources. There's always at least one line to hold the production together, functioning as a melody ...
| | CocoRosie Noah's Ark CD (2005)
Juxtaposition album
$12.89 The sisters Casady set the weirdness bar awfully high on their homemade debut, LA MAISON DE MON REVE, but this inspired follow-up finds the bar ascended as the angels take it on the road, recording everywhere from barnyards to actual music studios. As usual, classically trained vocalist Sierra delivers the delirious operatic vocalizing and plays piano, dulcimer, and autoharp while Bianca coos like a 12-year old vampire Billie Holiday and makes percussive noise from computers and shakers with equal abandon.
The difference here is in the confidence, the polish, and the guest stars: Antony (of Antony & the Johnsons) singing and playing piano on the movingly transgressive "Beautiful Boyz," Devendra Banhart sampled from what sounds like an old scratchy 78 (actually a phoned-in vocal) on "Brazilian Sun," and French rapper Spleen laying it down on the intro of "Bisounours." There ...

| | Spokane Measurement CD (2003)
Juxtaposition album
$13.05 On Spokane's fourth full-length, Measurement, glacial melodies mix with subtle effects and sparse male/female vocals to create a sort of secular, post-rock version of Low. The lovely, understated production and hint of rhythm might be the result of Robert Donne (Labradford, Breadwinner), especially on the haunting instrumental "An Ideal History," a mix of low-end hum and a wound-down music box turned into a mid-album interlude. It leads to "Cities," a slowcore song in a whisper, punctuated by brushes and a lulling bass, given rich accompaniment by the breathy, Bilinda Butcher-sounding vocalist Courtney Bowles. The bittersweet post-shoegazer leaning appears on "Temporary Things," a sort of acoustic Slowdive ...

| | Tori Amos American Doll Posse CD (2007)
Juxtaposition songs
$9.59 For 2007's AMERICAN DOLL POSSE, singer-songwriter Tori Amos returns to more confrontational form, after her relatively subdued and introspective '05 outing, THE BEEKEEPER. While that album may have been informed by the warm, nurturing side of motherhood, POSSE seems to plant its feet on the fierce, protective side of raising a child, with Amos referring to various social and political issues even in the record's title, which nods to the wildly popular American Girl series of collectable dolls and gives the bold performer yet another reason to play dress-up.
In keeping with the various personas depicted on POSSE's cover, Amos has kept the album appropriately eclectic, with the upbeat, keyboard-driven "Bouncing Off Clouds" and buoyant "Secret Spell" playing off moody songs such as "Teenage Hustling," which breaks into a startling guitar-heavy swagger as it comments on despondent youth. By remaining fascinatingly unpredictable (see "Big Wheel," a raucous Southern rock number replete with twangy electric-guitar lines), Amos proves that she is still a vital and ...
