Melody Maker (9/14/96, p.52) - Recommended - "...What Rollins appears to be selling us is the spectacle of his hatred and paranoia in itself, an autistic savant with Tourette's Syndrome and a World Trade Center-sized chip on his shoulder. Is he that knowing: both ringmaster and freakshow, pimp and prozzie? Or is it just an expert acting job? Who cares? Roll up!..."
Alternative Press (1/97, p.80) - 3 (out of 5) - "Ali and Gayle's playing is undoubtedly among the best in post-Coltrane free jazz....And Rollins' lyrics and spoken-word semi-comedy are among the best of anyone who belongs to the post-punk slipstream..."
Everything is a spoken-word recording of a chapter from Henry Rollins' book Eye Scream. Unlike most of his spoken-word albums, which are essentially long, rambling, and funny monologs, Everything is a recitation that intends to be somewhat important. Throughout the album, Rollins recites fairly awkward poetry over a minimalist, beatnik jazz backdrop provided by Charles Gayle and Rashied Ali. Rollins has a terrific sense of detail and humor, which is normally evident in his prose and monologs. In his poetry, he becomes clumsy and humorless -- his clear, simple sentences don't have as much power when they're delivered in stanzas. Furthermore, the jazz bleatings in the background seep into the forefront too often, becoming a major annoyance by the time the album is halfway over. In a way, it's easy to admire Rollins' intentions with Everything, but the final result is ultimately too tedious and misdirected to take very seriously. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Personnel: Henry Rollins (spoken vocals); Charles Gayle (violin, saxophone, piano); Rashied Ali (drums, percussion).

Everything album
$9.59 "Guerrilla Radio" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. THE BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
Rage Against the Machine doesn't release rushed albums for the sake of exposure. Each of the band's deftly crafted full-length albums has defined a progression in the group's sound and musical vision.
Here, Rage has taken the dynamics of its unique style to a deeper level, as evidenced on "Mic Check," which features gentle, unsettling guitar work by Tom Morello, who is deservedly hailed as an innovator of the instrument. The mid-tempo funk of "Maria" finds vocalist Zach De La Rocha telling the poetic story of an immigrant factory worker whose dream of freedom leads her unknowingly into modern-day slavery. Taking up the cause of death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jabal, De La Rocha questions the validity of his trial in "Guerilla Radio" and fleshes out his argument in "Voice of the Voiceless." "Sleep Now in the Fire" finds De La Rocha making historical references to government greed and the darker side of human nature. Though other rap/metal acts may have seemingly copped some of its musical traits, Rage Against the Machine has a conviction and passion that cannot be matched by any other band in the genre.

| | Damned Molten Lager CD (2000)
Everything CD music
$11.59 Molten Lager is an extremely great-sounding Damned show from June, 1994 in Mulhouse, France. If you like the Kris Dollimore, Moose, and Alan Lee Shaw lineup, then this blows away the overproduced LP this lineup sadly made. They should have released this instead. Being boogie-rock, it doesn't really sound like the Damned, but it sounds like a fairly kick-ass R&B- punk band being fronted by Dave Vanian. The few old classics this lineup's attempts, though, sound horrible!! Gag! (Moscrop P.O. Box 43001, Burnaby, Canada, V5G 3HO; www.suddendeath.com) ~ Jack Rabid

| | Pulley Together Again For The First Time CD (2001)
Everything music CDs
$10.35 From the opening riff, it's obvious the listener is in for one hell of a ride. It's been two years since Pulley's last album, and in the interim guitarist Jim has departed, thus the title Together Again for the First Time. But being reduced to a quartet has not diminished the band's sound in the least; in fact, Pulley sounds stronger and tighter than ever. The album is packed with a baker's dozen of tracks that crackle with energy, and the production (by Ryan Greene and the band itself) captures the excitement of its stageshow and pulls it directly into the studio. A non-stop barrage of blistering tracks, all clocking in at just over two minutes, this is Pulley at its most frenetic. However, that doesn't mean melodies and harmonies have been thrown to the wind; if anything the hooks are brighter, and the songs more anthemic. The themes remain diverse, but mostly personal, the lyrics sharp and conveying deep emotions in just a few words. "Long Lost Trip" is particularly notable, etching the futility of living one's life by others' values, "Sick Feeling" is a taut vignette of a dying relationship, "In Search" is about one in trouble, while the exuberant "Hooray for Me" is a celebration of bandhood with a bluegrass tinge. They're right, it is just like the first time, only better. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
With this throbbing and unforgettable new release, Pulley firmly stakes out its own territory. And with commitment and irresistible verve, Pulley handily tosses their musical hats into the collective sonic mix of the twenty-first century. Epitaph Records.

$10.15 A collection of readings from his book of the same name, Black Coffee Blues is some pretty heavy stuff. Those who are only aware of the man from his spoken word work may be a bit off-put, but there is still some quality here. | | Curlew North America CD (1986)
Everything album
$15.59 First recorded in 1984-1985 but previously released only on the European Moers label in 1986, North America is an excellent companion to Live in Berlin, which was recorded in 1986. Both discs are highly eclectic, but North America captures a lighter, more whimsical side of Curlew, with most pieces relatively short, and styles range from adulterated swing ("Two-Day 'Till Tomorrow") to skewed, harmolodic funk ("Oklahoma") and a ballad, "Mink's Dream," with a strong Ellington influence. Saxophonist George Cartwright plays both tenor and alto saxes, and while greasy funk might be his specialty, his alto sometimes has an uncanny resemblance to Ornette Coleman's playing (as on the harmolodic piece), and his breathy, soulful work on "Mink's Dream" even recalls Coleman Hawkins. On the up-tempo numbers, Cartwright's sputtering, funky sax (occasionally breaking into free jazz squeals) is complemented by the astringent, sometimes atonal scraping of Tom Cora's cello, Fred Frith's guitar and violin, and Mark Howell's additional guitar. The music is rhythmic but nimble. Frequent, unexpected twists and turns and the unusual timbral elements of cello and violin add an element of novelty, but there's an underlying seriousness and power that elevates the music and commands attention. This reissue of the 1984-1985 studio recording is supplemented with six tracks from a live 1983 date in a small N.Y.C. club, Mort's Place. Curlew's personnel throughout their history has always been fluid, and a year or two earlier, Cartwright and Cora were the only links to the group that recorded North America. Drummer Anton Fier predates J. Pippin Barnett on the club date, and Otto Williams is on bass rather than Fred Frith. Nicky Skopelitis plays guitar. Even allowing for the inferior acoustics of this live session, the sound is much heavier and there is more unison playing -- a contrast that is even more apparent because of the repetition of four songs in both the live and the later studio sessions. Fier went on to form the Golden Palominos at about this time, which also included Curlew guitarist Skopelitis. Fier's preference for a heavier, more edgy style of funk had an obvious effect on the group, with wit and whimsy traded for a sound that is more relentless and menacing. It's an interesting progression, which serves to document the group's evolution into the playful and yet still dangerous beast that they were to become. ~ Bill Tilland
Recorded at B.C. Studio, Brooklyn, New York and live at Mort's Place, New York, New York in 1983.

| | Rapture Echoes CD (2003)
Everything CD music
$8.49 If you're so inclined, it's easy to play spot-the-influence with the Rapture, one of the best of New York City's neo-punk-funk crop. One track suggests Robert Smith fronting the Pop Group, another evokes a collision between A Certain Ratio and New Order, etc. But that approach would entail missing the forest for the trees. Like millions of bands before them, the Rapture leaves a trail of its musical inspirations, but this isn't 1981, and ECHOES is very much of its own time.
The band started out as a more abrasive, jagged, Wire/Fall-like outfit without much of a groove, but starting with their world-beating single "House of Jealous Lovers," they began turning toward a danceable, atmospheric sound (with the help of the DFA production crew). Accordingly, ECHOES is a smorgasbord of funky, elastic basslines, percolating synthesizers, and angular guitar riffs, all artfully arranged for maximum bite. Atop it all, Luke Jenner's angst-ridden yelp insures that no matter how self-assured the framework, an aura of emotional upheaval will always skew the Rapture's balance toward the unpredictable.
Owing much to Gang Of Four, The Cure, David Bowie and P.I.L., The Rapture are one retro band that even a jaded postpunker can learn to love. Here is the stuff with which so many have waited for so long to hear. Though they clearly do live sampling (could they be any more blatant than the drum beat on "Open Up Your Heart"?), it's easy to forgive here because there is so much meat on these bones and it is served well done. Give it a listen, you won't regret it!

| | Scientists Sedition CD (2007)
Everything album
$13.59 Though 1980s Australian garage punks the Scientists were unjustly overlooked and subsequently forgotten by many, they were also worshipped by some of the hippest names in rock (Jon Spencer, the White Stripes, and Nirvana among them). SEDITION is a live set recorded in 2006 at the Mudhoney-curated All Tomorrow's Parties festival in London. Without losing a single step, Kim Salmon and an in-their-prime line-up tear through raging classics such as "Swampland," "Solid Gold Hell," "Blood Red River," and "When Fate Deals Its Mortal Blow." If you're among the many who've been sleeping on the Scientists all these years, here's your wake-up call.
Throughout most of the '80s Perth band THE SCIENTISTS spewed forth a sound that was swampy, primal and modern-urban all at once. Their name has been dropped by NIRVANA, THE WHITE STRIPES, THE VON BONDIES and many more as a key influence of how they could reimagine rock n' roll. And along with THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, invented the inner city look of that era. The original line up of KIM SALMON, TONY THEWLIS,
