Sound Chambers is the audio element of an intermedia project also involving architects Nikolaus Hirsch and Michel Müller, and graphic artist Markus Weisbeck. The work was premiered in the park of the Fundaçao Serralves, Porto, in September 2003. Little details are given on the installation (it involved geometrical configurations of hedges) and its relation to the music heard on the CD. That said, the music gracefully survives on its own. First contact with Sound Chambers is surprising, as one does not expect something this ambient, relaxed, and accessible. Franz Hautzinger trades his noise-based breaths and spurts in favor of finely chiseled trumpet lines, short successions of notes casually delivered and left to echo in the distance (very Bill Dixon-esque). Joseph Suchy alternates between psychedelic folk guitar strumming and lush, disquieting guitar soundscapes. Ekkehard Ehlers uses piano and noise recordings as sound sources to create shifting atmospheres. The whole thing strongly recalls Brian Eno's collaborations with Jon Hassell, both in terms of style and easiness of approach. This may give the impression that the album is short on experimentation, but in fact some of these untitled tracks push deeper into abstract sound-smithing, and there is always more going on than what meets the ear. Still, in the end, this album is considerably more accessible than what can be considered as the "regular output" of any of these three musicians. Fans of Ehlers' Plays series, of Hautzinger's microsonic improvising, or of Suchy's noisy sound constructions may very well find Sound Chambers lacking substance, but it remains a very well-done disc when accepted on its own terms. ~ François Couture

BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. When it was originally released in 1964, this set of music was a bit of a hit, selling over 100,000 copies. Brazilian guitarist-composer Baden Powell was working regularly in France at the time and he is joined on various selections by a French rhythm section and an orchestra. There are also some unaccompanied guitar solos. Listened to over four decades later, much of the music comes across as being overly sweet, safe and sleepy. Powell plays well enough, but the lack of mood variation and the unimaginative arrangements are unfortunate. Brandon Fields Biography Born in Indiana and raised in Santa Ana, California, Brandon started playing the piano at age five, violin at eight and was enamored with the alto saxophone by ten. He began working as a freelance musician while still a teenager, and moved to the Los Angeles area in 1982 to embrace the inspiring local club and studio scene. Brandon's debut recording of original m, "The Other Side Of The Story", came out in 1986. This was followed by the "The Traveler", "Other Places", "Everybodies' Business", and "Brandon Fields".
