This is Rosy Parlane's first "major" release after a handful of albums on tiny labels (including his own Sigma imprint), and his strongest achievement to date. The music has now lost any trace of harshness (which was still present in 2001's Getxo) to adopt a soft, shimmering quality. Jon Wozencroft's predominantly blue photographs adorning the booklet aptly reflect the character of the music: calm, snugly warm, slightly sad or pensive. Once again Fennesz comes to mind, but a Fennesz stripped from his reassuring melodies and occasional harsh outbursts, leaving only the rich textures of filtered sounds. Iris is comprised of three pieces titled "Part One," "Part Two," and "Part Three," and they truly give the impression of a single work in three movements. Each piece establishes its mood immediately, then takes its time to evolve, giving the listener time to accept its inherent logic -- or to be oblivious to the stretched-out fade-ins and slow turns. "Part Two" is a delicate, ever-shifting cloud: you can decide to lay down on it and be carried or gaze into it to watch the fog currents interact, your eyes unable to reach the other side of the cloud, except in the very last few seconds, when the whole thing swiftly dematerializes. The human factor is very strong throughout the album; Parlane has planted in his music a sense of kindness that is too rare in this kind of music. Listeners who come to experimental electronica by way of Fennesz should seriously consider choosing Iris as their next step. ~ François Couture
Rosy Parlane lives in New Zealand; he began playing music with the avant-garde rock trio Thela. Thela released two CDs, Eponymous and Argentina on the label Ecstatic Peace! He subsequently began working with abstract electronic based music, both as a solo artist and as Parmentier with fellow Thela collaborator, Dion Workman. His full and intricate soundscapes are comprised of sample-loops, pianos, guitars, and field recordings manipulated via digital means. Parlane has released two solo albums on Sigma Editions, and a collaboration with Christian Fennesz on the Australian label, Synaesthesia [Live, SYN001]. Iris is the result of a concentrated period of activity and artistic development that will introduce Rosy Parlane to an audience hungry for innovative music. He both challenges and invigorates the current bias towards immersive sound, without ever losing sight of the human touch. Rosy Parlane Iris Songs | 1. | Iris Part One |

Purchase Iris CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Donnie Darko CD (2002)
Iris album
$15.95 The most remarkable thing about Richard Kelly's directorial debut, Donnie Darko, is its sheer tenacity. After suffering the fatal blow of a post-September 11 release date, the ominous film, which features the destruction of a sleepy suburban household by a falling jet engine, was pulled from theaters. Its subsequent release on video garnered a rabid fan base that elevated the movie to cult status, spawning hundreds of websites devoted to untangling its spidery threads of time-travel logic and spiritual chicanery. Rookie composer Michael Andrews, whose only previous work was for television's Freaks and Geeks, captures the underlying dread and unsettling beauty of the film by remaining reverent to it. Clocking in at just over 30 minutes, the heart of the piece is a pulsing, hypnotic waltz that transports you to the alternate-reality Middlesex, VA where the film takes place. His use of period (1980s) synths and a voxophone, tastefully punctuated by sparse choral arrangements, evoke a Danny Elfman score leached of bombast and quivering in its naked form. Like Air's soundtrack to The Virgin Suicides, Andrews' songs create such a specific sense of place that an entirely different film would emerge in their absence, robbing the consumer of its dizzying afterglow -- the soft, walking pianos on "The Artifact and Living" and "Rosie Darko" tiptoe through your subconscious for weeks. Due to the sparse, six-million-dollar budget of ...

| | Goldfrapp Felt Mountain CD (2000)
Iris songs
$9.99 Disc Two is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks as well as multimedia computer files.
When Goldfrapp's debut, FELT MOUNTAIN, appeared in 2000, no one was quite sure how to categorize the music, but that didn't stop fans and critics alike from gushing about it. A collaboration between singer-keyboardist-songwriter Allison Goldfrapp and composer/producer Will Gregory, Goldfrapp is rooted in the heavy-lidded, ambient soundscapes of trip-hop, yet exhibits an equal interest in various other styles ranging from jazz to cabaret to film music.
On FELT MOUNTAIN, Goldfrapp sometimes sounds trapped in an Ennio Morricone-styled tableau: all whistling and spooky wind-swept vistas. Elsewhere, the duo exudes the cool, tongue-in-cheek attitude of a Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood project. Yet Goldfrapp are more than just postmodern tricksters: their songs are substantive, and their productions and electronica-charged arrangements are never less than outstanding. This is the first (and will likely remain one of the best) offerings from this impressively inventive duo.

| | Snatch Stealin Stones & Breakin Bones Snatch CD (2001) Original Soundtrack
Iris album
$10.59 SNATCH is an infectious mixed bag of a soundtrack that expertly provides the mood for Guy Ritchie's roller-coaster ride of a movie about London's gangster underworld. Like his American counterpart Quentin Tarantino, Ritchie has an eclectic ear for music that comes up with a mix of well-known tracks by the Specials (the ska classic "Ghost Town") and Oasis (the clattering instrumental "F**kin' in the Bushes"), and lesser known rock songs and cutting-edge dance music.
Highlights include the baroque psychedelia of the Stranglers ("Golden Brown"), the spot-on reggae of 10CC ("Dreadlock Holiday") and the shuffling New Orleans R&B of Huey "Piano" Smith & The Clowns ("Don't You Just Know It"). Ritchie even includes new spouse Madonna ("Lucky Star") and an underground UK club hit by her French electronica collaborator Mirwais ("Disco Science"). British DJs also get their due, whether it's a darkly hypnotic chill-out track by Massive Attack ("Angel") or the psycho-tropic ...
