Paradigm Shift consists of organist Gerry Youngman, guitarist Melvin Henderson, and drummer Ted Poor. Their debut recording adds several American guests used in various combinations. Clifford Brown's "Sandu" is reworked into a funky soul-jazz setting, utilizing expressive solos by trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and trumpeter Marcus Printup, and adding a tasty George Benson-like solo by Henderson. Virtuoso vibraphonist Joe Locke is at the forefront of the light but breezy take of "Yesterdays," with the trio coolly percolating behind him. Youngman's "Half a World Away" is lightly swaggering funk, showcasing Printup (on both open and muted horn) and Henderson. Stevie Wonder's "Big Brother" is adapted successfully into a jazz-funk, featuring Locke and Gordon in a very accessible adaptation. The trio finally saves a pair of originals just for themselves, including "Simplistic Blues" (which is more engaging than its title makes it sound), though the rather pedestrian drumming in "Why Not Scrambled" gives it a cheesy flavor. Overall, this is a good start to a promising jazz band. ~ Ken Dryden

Paradigm Shift: Melvin Henderson (guitar); Bill Tiberio (saxophone); Marcus Printup (trumpet); Gerry Youngman (flugelhorn, organ); Wycliffe Gordon (trombone); Joe Locke (vibraphone); Ted Poor (drums).

A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than ...

An excellent modern mainstream pianist who is a bit taken for granted, Rob Schneiderman was actually one of the better jazz pianists of the 1990s. On Back in Town, he plays standards but often with subtle surprises. For example, the ballad "Darn That Dream" ...

This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. The music centers around the opening four-part "Monterey Suite," a tour de force commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and originally performed ...

Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander and alto saxophonist Vincent Herring pair up for two nights of fireworks at Smoke on this 2005 release. Blues For Marcus
Steve Wilson Blues For Marcus CD  (1993)

Shifting Times CD music
CD $15.05
Steve Wilson's second recording as a leader shows considerable growth from his first, as he adds Steve Nelson's vibes to a group consisting of frequent Wilson collaborators (pianist Bruce Barth, bassist James Genus, and drummer Lewis Nash), with the sax-vibes front line creating a different group sound while adding more of the passion that characterized the first. Wilson, who wrote three of the eight compositions on Blues for Marcus, shows a stronger voice on alto sax, sounding reminiscent of Gary Bartz at times, and introduces his soprano sax, an instrument he would later use exclusively with Ralph Peterson's Fotet. Highlights include Ornette Coleman's "Jayne," based ...
Emergence
Lonnie Plaxico Emergence CDs  (2000)

Shifting Times music CDs
CD $14.65  Audio Samples
Emergence begins with a bang but then goes gradually downhill. Plaxico alternates between acoustic and electric bass, and mightily tries to reconcile the jazz and funk elements of his vision. Although most tracks feature driving rhythms, incredibly intricate horn writing, and compelling solos, the album grows numbingly repetitive as it proceeds. On the jazz side, "Transformation" begins the record with riveting post-bop fire, while "Libertarian" and "Red Light District" provide new perspectives on the standards "Dear Old Stockholm" and "Love for Sale," respectively. On the funk side, "Delusion" and "Emancipation" stand out, recalling the dissonant colors heard on Sam Rivers' acclaimed 1999 album Inspiration. But Plaxico seems to run low on ideas by the time he gets to "Equilibrium," "Inner Voice," and Chick Corea's "Matrix." Six brief interludes featuring bass and/or percussion are interspersed throughout the program, yielding mixed results -- the most effective being "Paramita (to arrive at the other side)." Monster players abound, including the wonderful Don Braden on saxophones, Ralph Alessi on trumpet, and Jason Moran on piano. Emergence is also distinguished by several lesser known but highly capable musicians: ...
