(2 Customer Reviews)
Unlike the other three entries in Universal's 2004 discount-priced series of albums titled The Gospel Spirit, those by Loretta Lynn, Bill Monroe & His Bluegrass Boys, and the Statler Brothers, this one is not a specially assembled collection of tracks from separate LPs and singles. Rather, it is a straight reissue -- the first CD version -- of Conway Twitty's 1973 album Clinging to a Saving Hand. The ten-song set consists largely of newly written Nashville originals, and reached the Top 20 of the country charts on Twitty's career momentum. ~ William Ruhlmann
Although it reached the Top 20 of the country charts on Twitty's career momentum, it is not one of the more memorable moments in that career. The ten-song set consists largely of newly written Nashville originals, some of which are notable mainly for their cringe-worthy campiness. Even (perhaps especially) the most devout Christian is likely to be put off by "The Third Man," a first-person, spoken word account of the crucifixion, and "Jesus Is a Soul Man" is not exactly the most clever pun ever applied to the Savior. Worst of all, however, is another spoken word effort, the maudlin "Steal Away," which is set in an African-American church and concerns a funeral sermon over a dead child. Twitty's Mississippi accent has an unfortunate effect on the word Negro, which comes out in a way many would find offensive, and his approximation of black dialect isn't much more acceptable. Universal might have been better advised to leave this one in the vault. ~ William Ruhlmann

Gospel Spirit album
$5.89 Digitally remastered by Bob Norberg & Rob Christie (Capitol Mastering).
The most eclectic of Glen Campbell's late-1960s albums, and his first number one LP, 1968's WICHITA LINEMAN runs from the orchestral melodrama of the title track--the signature song of Glen Campbell's entire career, apart from perhaps "Rhinestone Cowboy"--and ...

Gospel Spirit album
$6.69 Originally from Abilene by way of Nashville, singer-songwriter Lee Roy Parnell carves out his unique brand of country soul on the funky BACK TO THE WELL. | | Ty Herndon Right About Now CD (2007)
Gospel Spirit CD music
$14.59 Country singer Ty Herndon is back in the studio after a six-year break. Yeah, there was a Christmas record a couple of years back, but this is the first time the Meridian, Mississippi wonder has done an honest to goodness modern country record in nearly seven years. Herndon hit the charts and the road in a fury during the mid-'90s, and his demons hit back hard. Right: Herndon had a hellhound on his trail. Right About Now is one of those records that a man makes when he feels he has everything to prove. On the Jackson/Titan independent label (which is distributed by Fontana), Herndon lays out 11 new songs with help from songwriters like producer Darrell Brown, Keith Urban, Jess Cates, Beth Nielsen Chapman and others. The opener, written by Brown, Radney Foster, and Urban is a downtempo modern country rocker turned personal anthem. Herndon's voice is not only unchanged from his missing years, it's stronger, his phrasing is tighter and more expressive, and his manner of handling a song is entirely his own. "You Still Own Me" opens with a fiddle and a ...
