Gordon takes his time stretching out over the forms, which are particularly drawn out to begin with. Drew's "Coppin' the Haven" is a more concise continuation of the effort to reconcile the modal approach with the use of more bop-like changes. "Darn That Dream," a ballad feature for the leader, is done as a quartet, as is the one Gordon composition "Kong Neptune," a track not released on the original LP. A particularly interesting aspect of this disc is the chance to hear bassist Niels--Henning Orsted Pedersen making one of his earliest recorded appearances.
When he expatriated to Scandinavia just before this session in Paris was recorded, Dexter Gordon said he was liberated in many ways, as a jazz musician and as a human being. This is reflected in the lengthy track on this album, a testament to that newly found freedom, addressing the restrictions the American music scene placed on artists to do the two- to three-minute hit. With the nearly 18-minute "Tanya" and the 11-minute "Coppin' the Haven," Gordon and his quintet, featuring trumpeter Donald Byrd, were able to jam at length with no thought of being edited, and they fully prolong their instrumental remarks in a way few other musicians -- jazz or otherwise -- would allow themselves. Yes, it would be difficult to hear these tracks on the radio, but the tradeoff was a listening experience for their fans that would also showcase a rare commodity in the lexicon of their style of post-bop mainstream jazz -- consistency. The simple, sweet, and lightly swinging "Tanya" has become a classic song, and it is a staple in most saxophonists' diets, even though the supportive chord structures from pianist Kenny Drew and Byrd's up-front brass are more attractive or noticeable than Gordon's bluesy tenor. Memorable for many reasons, Drew's brilliant composition "Coppin' the Haven" is textbook modern jazz, a modal minor-key delight as Byrd again dominates with a shining, gliding melody tacked on to an easy swing that exemplifies the song form for jazz in its best sense. Gordon steps up apart from the trumpeter on the great ballad "Darn That Dream," and is at his best, wringing every regretful emotion out of his horn as only he can. The CD version contains the bonus track "Kong Neptune" sans Byrd, a good swinger that cops from no other influences, merging the mythical strengths of the two creatures in its title via Gordon's muscular, lithe, and athletic on-land and at-sea horn. At around 47 substantive minutes of music, One Flight Up stands as a testament to Dexter Gordon's viability as a bandleader and teammate, while his individualism is somewhat sublimated. It's a good listen to digest all the way through, especially if you are as patient as the performers, who have a lot to say. ~ Michael G. Nastos

Again one wonders: where would jazz have gone without the advent of the LP? Certainly not down the path that brought us the 18-minute "Tanya," which originally took up the entire first side of Dexter Gordon's second expatriate album for Blue Note in 1964. Based in Copenhagen since 1962, Gordon assembled a group in Paris for this session, including fellow Americans-abroad Kenny Drew, Donald Byrd and Art Taylor. It's Byrd who contributes "Tanya," a cross-pollination of Blue Note smolder and then-the-rage modal perspective.

One Flight Up music CDs
$8.35 Forget the stylized in-session cover art closeup of the "jazz man at work:" eyes clenched shut, lips pursed around a mouthpiece, dim lighting. On the cover of his Blue Note debut Gordon appears perched in a Central Park carriage in a sharp-looking trench coat, one hand on his horn case, the other waving a cigarette, a big grin on his face. Doin' allright, indeed. And compared to some of his labelmates, Gordon was perhaps something of an already-arrived ...

$12.65 Justifiably considered one of the best of Dizzy Gillespie's many live sets, AT NEWPORT captures a dead-on 1957 performance featuring Gillespie and one of his best bands, starring baritone saxophonist Pee Wee Moore, tenor Benny Golson, and pianist Wynton Kelly. Road-tightened by months of world tours sponsored by the US State Department's cultural exchange program, the ensemble is flawless, but not at all mechanical. ...
| | Graveyard Soldjas 3 Time Losers CD (2001)
One Flight Up album
$16.45 In the beginning the east ruled the rap landscape. The world was captivated and intrigued by this fresh and creative force of youthful spirit and unbridled energy. Setting the platform, the east ignited a force that the world was not yet ready for, the movement we now call hip-hop.Infiltrating to the west, a new chapter in rap history was written. Challenging the precedent set by the east, west coats rappers moved to the forefront, displaying a diverse mix of sound influenced by their own stylistic nuances. The domination of these musical coasts, although still strong, waned with the emergence of another sphere of influence-the "dirty south." Up from the sweltering heat, gumbo, collard greens, grandma's macaroni and cheese, and country slang, the south has affectionately been embraced by the hip-hop community, while setting its own standard and ingraining its own mark on this powerful music genre.Graveyard Soldjas (GYS) add themselves to this list of established southern acts, pushing the southern sound forward while continuing to put its artists on the map. Corey "Gemini" Simon, David "Tiga" Lawson, and Elton "Bandit" Porter are the members of the trio that make up this up and coming New Orleans based rap group. Raised ...

One Flight Up music CDs
$16.79 Jazz Oracle's deluxe edition of early Cliff Jackson recordings opens with a QRS player piano roll dating from mid-1926. It is a fine example of Jackson's artistry; he would also record Sidney Easton's "Hock Shop Blues" with vocalist Rosa Henderson in 1927. Tracks 4-16 document the complete studio recordings (with alternate takes) of Cliff Jackson & His Crazy Cats, also known as his Crazy Kats and his Krazy Kats. The group was formed in 1927 and played regularly at the Lenox Club within sight of the Cotton Club until 1932. These wonderfully arcane ...
