TENDER MOMENTS, recorded in 1967, was another step forward for this always-evolving, virtuoso pianist. McCoy Tyner assembled an unusual ensemble for the session--in addition to a standard rhythm section and front line of horns (trumpet, trombone, alto and tenor saxophones), he also added French horn, flute, and tuba. Scoring for such a group resulted in new compositional approaches for Tyner, and the music here has a distinct orchestral feel, with shifting tonal colors and a sound that resembles a cross between a classical ensemble and a big band.
Fans of Tyner's work with John Coltrane and smaller outfits might raise an eyebrow at such a large, unconventional group, but they needn't fear--the music is staunchly in the progressive hard-bop vein. The six originals fall somewhere between the exploratory, often modal style Tyner pioneered with Coltrane, the groove-heavy bop of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, and the rich sound paintings of Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus. The experiment works wonderfully from beginning to end, partially due to the incredible personnel (which includes Lee Morgan, James Spaulding, Bennie Maupin, and Joe Chambers), all of who play at the top of their game here.

| | Art Blakey Buhaina's Delight CD (1962) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Tender Moments CD music
$8.09 When Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers expanded to a sextet with the addition of Curtis Fuller on trombone, the group took on the character of a small big band propelled by Blakey's forceful drumming. BUHAINA'S DELIGHT, another session in the long line of great Blue Note dates from this period, displays that classic line-up in pristine form. With Freddie Hubbard replacing Lee Morgan, Cedar Walton replacing Bobby Timmons and musical director Wayne Shorter, the Messengers were full of fresh sounds and vibrant with energy.
Uncharacteristically for a Messengers session, the relaxed shuffle "Backstage Sally" opens the disc in a laid back groove. ...

| | Freddie Hubbard Blue Spirits CD (1966) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Tender Moments songs
$8.45 This excellent 1966 set features a diverse range of ensembles, all lead by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. The first is an octet, featuring congas and a euphonium; the second, a seven-member group, including the great McCoy Tyner on piano; the third is a sextet that boasts drummer Elvin Jones and Herbie Hancock (who doubles on piano and celeste). James Spaulding lends his alto sax and flute to two of the groups, and Joe Henderson is in two as well (his melodic, yet adventurous, tenor sax playing is especially notable). Also featured are tenor player Hank Mobley, bassist Reggie Workman, pianist Harold Mabern, and drummer Pete La Roca.
The fare on BLUE SPIRITS is in keeping with the hard bop of the era. A heavy soul-jazz influence is heard on the opening "Soul Surge" and the Latin-tinged ...

| | Joe Henderson In 'N Out CD (1964) Bonus Track; Remastered
Tender Moments CD music
$8.85 This progressive session from Joe Henderson is a quintessential mid-'60s Blue Note disc. Although a great deal of attention has been placed on the significance of the work of Miles Davis and John Coltrane at that time, Henderson was one of the leaders in the '60s scene that forged new ground into adventurous areas of jazz. The saxophonist plays sharply with a highly rhythmic style that swings and strides through the modally oriented material of stellar tracks like the blazing title cut, "Punjab," and the funky mambo "Short Story." Joining Henderson on the session are Kenny Dorham, McCoy Tyner, Richard Davis, and Elvin ...

Tender Moments album
$18.99 Vibraphonist Jay Hoggard, who doubles on marimba, explores straight-ahead jazz, some Afro-Cuban pieces and originals influenced by African music on this outing from 2003. All of the music swings and is fairly accessible while being creative. Dwight Andrews is a major asset on his three reeds, pianist Hilton Ruiz is a guest on three numbers, James Weidman doubles on organ and piano on the other selections, and the two percussionists add fire to some of the music. Hoggard contributed all but Hilton Ruiz's "Guataca" and several of his originals would be catchy enough to become standards if they were heard by enough musicians. The Right Place is easily recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
