Soul Searchin'
$15.24 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s and then winding through the '70s, whereas this opens with the bright, fabulous blast of "You Should Be Dancing" and remains in their late-'70s heyday for a while before fast-forwarding to such latter-day adult contemporary hits as "One." We don't get to "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke" until halfway through the second disc, and this jumbled, almost haphazard sequencing is a little disconcerting ...
| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) Bonus Track; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Soul Searchin'
$9.58 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically gritty observations on street life, over bleak, minor chords and busy percussion. T.I.P. featuring Beanie Sigel offers "2 Glock 9's," one of the soundtrack's most rugged grooves, a minimal, stripped-down drum break that stutters and skids backwards and forwards over a Notorious BIG vocal sample and is easily the eeriest track on the album. The only light relief is provided by Too $hort's "Pimp Sh*t," a humorous ...

Soul Searchin'
$16.19 Thigpen has a deft hand on the drums, and this live set from the Copenhagen Jazz House in 1998 is good proof of his skill. Never one to grandstand, he puts the music first. His trio, with Carsten Dahl on piano and Jesper Bodilsen on bass, lays down some straightforward and pleasing traditional jazz, with ...
| | Project Pat Mista Don't Play: Everythang's Workin' CD (2001)
Soul Searchin'
$10.49 As a member of the infamous Three 6 Mafia clique, Project Pat is bound to tear up the club with anything he releases. His third solo album, MISTA DON'T PLAY, is no different. While his previous solo joints received regional praise, the success that the Three 6 Mafia has recently experienced with the hit single "Sippin' on Syrup" is bound to grant him much larger exposure.
The lead-off single "Chicken Heads" is Project Pat's new claim to fame. Pat is at his best revelling in the song's pimped out story. Not that the thug anthems "Break the Law" and "We Can Get Gangsta" are missing anything, because they offer the same crunk feel as most Three 6 records. With MISTA DON'T ...
| | Big Boi & Dre Present... Outkast CD (2001)
Soul Searchin'
$8.99 "The Whole World" (w/ Killer Mike) won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
While on the surface, Outkast's initial single, 1994's "Player's Ball," may have seemed like just another hip-hop-word-of-the-moment single, closer attention revealed the mushed-up, twister slang of the lyrics and the oddly droll angle on Yuletide packed into a pop-rap single of gangstas at play. Thereafter, Big Boi and Dre produced three solid, but under-appreciated albums in the '90s, remaining on the periphery of stardom with the occasional hit, and stirring a bit of controversy with "Rosa Parks." While enough of a buzz had built by 2000, no one could have predicted the intensely beautiful chaos and disorder permeating STANKONIA. From the smooth rasp of "So Fresh, So Clean" to the dark, rising anger encased in a hook too good not to be the #1 single it was "Ms. Jackson," to the fury of drums, tongue-twisters and revival refrains on the brilliantly incomprehensible "B.O.B."
BIG BOI & DRE PRESENT includes all aforementioned hits and will likely add a few to the Outkast legend as the duo somehow manages to expand its horizons further. Of particular note, "The Whole World" starts off in a vaudeville world replete with tympani before a singsong chorus gives way to hip-hop style, an alluring and starkly original work, as is most of Outkast's catalogue ...

| | Ron Carter Where? CD (1961) Remastered
Soul Searchin'
$8.79 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Ron Carter, who came to prominence as the bassist for Miles Davis's second great quintet in the 1960s, made his first date as a leader with 1961's WHERE? The band features the great Eric Dolphy on flute, saxophone, and bass clarinet, drummer Charlie Persip, pianist Mal Waldron, and bassist George Duvivier (who engages in occasional dialogue with Carter's cello). The music synthesizes strains of post bop, free jazz, and chamber jazz, and the ensemble work is impressive, especially in the case of Dolphy.
Two Randy Weston tunes crop up on the ...
